Several Collin County families will be blessed with new homes this month as the North Collin County Habitat for Humanity (NCCHH) steps in to lend a helping hand.
Celeste Cox, executive director of NCCHH, said the organization hopes to continue to provide homes for those in need.
"This is our 19th year and next year will be our 20th anniversary," she said. "Our goal is to serve 20 families and every home we build gets families out of substandard housing and into home ownership."
The NCCHH provides qualified families an affordable home with no cash down payment and an interest free mortgage for 20 years, which the homeowners would not be able to find elsewhere. For the families receiving the homes, it means the money left over each month goes toward basic necessities instead of high rent payments or loan interest.
In order for families to qualify, Cox said, the family must make between $20,000 to $40,000 a year, live in substandard surroundings and contribute 300 to 500 hours of sweat equity. Habitat for Humanity works toward the goal of providing homeowners a hand up, not a hand out.
There has already been a home dedicated this month and another dedication is scheduled for May.
The first home, built by Darling Homes, is the eleventh home built by the company and the 23rd home built during Habitat's Super Build. The home was dedicated Wednesday to Felecia Berry.
"This house that was dedicated Wednesday was our 66th home and we plan to continue to serve families in need," Cox said.
Margaret and Debryce Allen will also have their home dedicated May 4. Their home is built by K Hovnanian and is the 24th home in Habitat's Super Build.
A wall-raising will be held April 30 for a home built by Bank of America for the as Bernal family, a large family with eight members.
According to a release, Tajuana and Dionicio Bernal learned about Habitat for Humanity from friends and family who saw their need. They have six children, Myosha, Dionicio III, Devon, Dominique, Francesca and Alexis, and are McKinney natives who were not able to own their own home due to economic circumstances. The Bernal's went to NCC-Habitat and through sweat-equity are able to finally have the home they have been hoping for.
"Words cannot express the great joy that I feel every time we talk to someone about our home or how our children will be coming home every day to a home and a room that is all theirs," Tajuana said in a press release. "I know that this will just make them see that their dreams can come true."
The home will take about 10 weeks to build with many volunteers work Saturdays and throughout the week. The public is invited to attend the wall raising at 5 p.m. April 30 and volunteers are always needed. For information about NCCHH, visit ncc-habitat.com.
