Lucky Number Seven Loaves
BY Kevin Hageland, khageland@acnpapers.com
Now is the time of year that football players are used to working up a sweat.
And last Sunday was no different for Plano West’s Connor Vernon, Colby Conner and Blake Ligon. Only those three weren’t working up a sweat on the football field, rather in the name of charity as they volunteered their time for the second anniversary celebration of the Seven Loaves Food Pantry and Community Center.
The activity was part of a new partnership between Seven Loaves and the Plano West Quarterback Club.
The Wolves chose well in Seven Loaves, which works in conjunction with St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano.
More than 36,000 people in Collin County do not have the ability to obtain sufficient food every month. In response to that, Seven Loaves partnered with the North Texas Food Bank and Plano Independent School District to provide needed nutrition. The organization’s community center also provides grocery supplement, food for kids, clothing and a connection to food stamps or other social services.
The organization has grown quickly.
Seven Loaves was operating out of the youth closet at St. Andrew when Christmas rolled around in 2009. By the next holiday season, Seven Loaves set a goal of serving 25 families of four per week or 100 clients.
But Seven Loaves would far surpass that goal.
In 2010, the organization provided a week of food to 18,592 clients, which averages out to more than 357 people per week.

As the word partnership would suggest, having Vernon, Conner and Ligon volunteer at Seven Loaves was only the beginning of the two organizations’ work together.
The 13th annual Plano West Quarterback Club Golf Tournament will be held at the Tribute in The Colony on Monday, June 13. Proceeds from the event will help the Quarterback Club support Seven Loaves and Wolves football.
The Tribute, the site for this year’s event, is a links course patterned after the legendary courses in Scotland.
Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. with lunch and range balls provided. A four-person scramble format begins at 1:30 p.m. with a donation of $175 per golfer. Auctions, raffles and an awards dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m.
