Villarreal all smiles about Northeast Texas

Published: Saturday, May 14, 2011 1:34 AM CDT
McKinney goalkeeper Brett Villarreal is known for always having a smile on his face. So it's no surprise that a crowd of people came to help him celebrate signing a National Letter of Intent to Northeast Texas Junior College in Mount Pleasant.

“I really felt loved,” Villarreal said. “I didn't know this many people were going to show up.”

During his final season at McKinney, he split time with Corbin Whan in goal. Together, the pair amassed 13 shutouts and helped guide the team to a 20-1-1 record and a playoff run that ended in the regional quarterfinals.

The system was unique. McKinney head soccer coach Alan Pocock had never used it before, and while it meant less playing time for Villarreal, he had no problem with it. The way he sees it, he and Whan complimented one another well.

“I think it worked out, because what Corbin has I don't have,” he said. “...I thought it was very successful. I was cool with it the whole time.”

The most meaningful game for him this year was a 2-1 shootout win over Red Oak in the finals of the Lovejoy Tournament.

Villarreal chose Northeast Texas in part because it would allow him to see playing time right away. His future coaches there told him he would likely start, and since plenty of scouts roll through the college to watch the team play, he said he has a good opportunity to upgrade to a bigger school later on.

Currently, he has his sights set on either the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Villarreal plans on majoring in business with the hope of some day running his own trucking company like his dad.

But that's for the future. On Friday, he got the chance to take a few moments off from the hard work he's put in for McKinney over the years to enjoy the fruit of his labor.

“I definitely feel like it paid off,” Villarreal said.

Next season, the Lions will have a tough time finding a new way of keeping their goal safe.

“I would have liked to have him back another year, but I wish him all the best as he heads off to junior college to compete,” Pocock said.
