The city of McKinney is preparing for a Memorial Day weekend with events that range from biking and racing to remembering.
ÒWe invite the community to come out and enjoy cycling, live entertainment, childrenÕs activities and more,Ó she said. ÒLast year 56 different cities in Texas participated alongside cyclists from New Zealand, Australia and Mexico. ItÕs a lot of fun. If you donÕt have plans Friday night, you have to come downtown.Ó
The event consists of six biking races, six hours of festivities, $20,000 in prize money for racers and entertainment for the whole family. Racers are very up close and personal and Lake said spectators can feel the wind from the bikes as the cyclists pass by.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the McKinney Education Foundation and Spokes4Hope. Warmup for the races begins at 4:30 p.m., and racing commences at 5 p.m. Live music starts at 6:30 p.m. and there will be food, vendors and beer gardens open all evening.
The event will be in Historic Downtown McKinney at 314 S. Chestnut Street. For information visit www.downtownmckinney.com.
McKinney is also hosting the "Stonebridge Memorial Day Race" on Memorial Day on May 30 where the entire family can come support runners as they raise money for charities and compete for prizes. This event is open to children all the way up to adults in categories of a 1K, 5K, 10K and 15K races, with fees ranging from $15 to $25. There will be awards for the masters of the races, and all participants 9 years old and younger will receive medals for participating.
This is a great family activity to promote healthy activity and doing something for a good cause. Also, if you arenÕt racing or just watching from the sidelines, they are always looking for volunteers.
Michelle Huddleston is heading the event and expects another successful year.
ÒThis is our 10th year and will be our biggest event,Ó she said. ÒWe are going to be doing snow cones, and every participant in the 1K gets a medal. There will be free bagels, and Fuse will be on hand providing free Fuse drinks to the community. Part of the proceeds go to Fisher House.Ó
The event will begin at 7:45 a.m., Monday, May 30, at the Stonebridge Beach Club, 6203 Virginia Parkway. For information visit www.stonebridgeracers.com or call Michelle at 214-726-9886.
Pecan Grove, one of the oldest cemeteries in Texas, is hosting its 27th annual Memorial Day ceremony for the entire family. The free event is scheduled to remember the soldiers who fought and died for freedom. A community picnic barbecue, cooked and hosted by Boy Scouts of America Troop 303, will follow the ceremony.
The event will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30, at 1701 S. McDonald St. For information call 972-542-4029.
