Collin College, TWU create transfer program
By Marthe Stinton, mstinton@acnpapers.com
COLLIN COUNTY -- Collin College has been home to several students completing their core curriculum. Those who transfer to another college before completing their associate's degree often end their college career with a bachelor's degree.
That will all change for students who transfer to Texas Woman's University.
Collin College and TWU have teamed up to build a new partnership in the form of a Reverse Transfer Program -- a program that provides students who transferred from Collin College to TWU before completing their associate degree an opportunity to earn the degree.
Brenda Kihl, vice president of Academic and Institutional Effectiveness at Collin College, said the partnership will be a great benefit to students.
"The program will allow students who have completed the appropriate amount of courses the chance to gain an associate's degree," Kihl said. "We anticipate that we will be able to award numerous degrees. I think we definitely need to make sure students are aware of the possibility. For both colleges, the most important aspect is that we want to award students with all of the degrees they have earned."
Kihl said Collin College plans to expand the program to other universities and already has a partnership with the University of Texas at Dallas.
"It also helps demonstrate Collin College's contributions to student academic success," she said. "It shows that Collin College is awarding and can award more degrees to more students."
TWU and Collin College also have established a pre-admission partnership that allows Collin College students to gain access to university advisors, scholarship opportunities and more as they finish their core curriculum.
"We at TWU are delighted to have this reverse-transfer partnership with Colin College," said Dr. Robert Neely, TWU provost and vice president for academic affairs in a press release. "This agreement is clearly in the best interest of those students coming to TWU from Collin College, and is but one example of the kinds of collaborations that strengthen the nature of higher education in Texas."
Kihl said it took some time for both TWU and Collin College to identity the parameters that would determine the most number of students that would be completing the degree.
"It didn't take us much time," she said. "It was a more logistical decision than a difficult one."
