Double Trouble: Bosworths coming to West football camp

Published: Saturday, June 25, 2011 11:47 AM CDT
The NFL lockout has been a negative for the vast majority of football fans.

But for a group of youngsters in Plano it could turn out to be a positive as the lockout will allow Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Kyle Bosworth and Detroit Lions linebacker Korey Bosworth, both West alums, to return to their old stomping grounds Monday for a portion of the Wolves annual football camp.

"My sons both had an awesome experience in high school, so I know it's important to them to give back," said Robbie Bosworth, the twins mother. "We even thought about going all the way down to the [Plano Sports Authority] level to do a camp because the boys got their start in PSA."

Instead Kyle (a 6-foot-1, 236-pound linebacker) and Korey (a 6-foot-1, 242-pound linebacker) will be at West this week.

"One of the biggest rewards I have as a coach is when former players come back," said Mike Hughes, West head coach. "They don't have to be pro or anything like that, just a former player coming back; shaking hands with him, hearing that he enjoyed his time here, that's what it's all about."

Kyle will only attend the camp Monday and Tuesday due to prior commitments while Korey will be there for the entirety of the four-evening camp.

"I think some of these kids are still in awe of these guys; it probably helps that there is more than one of them," Ms. Bosworth said. "I know they want to tell the kids about what it takes to do well, even when you're in college. A lot of kids think once they get a scholarship to play in college they are set, but in reality you are joining a group of 80 people that were all stars at their school too."

Kyle and Korey can speak on that experience personally and from a family perspective as the duo thrived at UCLA before going to the NFL and their uncle Brian was a collegiate standout at Oklahoma before being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks.

"Yeah, kids always want to talk to the boys about their uncle," said Ms. Bosworth, The Boz's sister.

And while Ms. Bosworth could spin plenty of tales about her famous brother, she was more interested in talking about her sons' journey to the NFL.

"I'm just so proud of both of them," she said. "Being a single mom, it made life so much easier that the boys understood the value of setting goals and directions. They were good students and never got in any trouble. And they knew they didn't have to play football, I just wanted them to be the best they could be at whatever it is they love."

That being said, Ms. Bosworth was OK with football being their chosen profession.

"I love going to games and just watching both of them play," she said, "because I know they are having a blast doing it."

Korey and Kyle will try to relate that same sense of fun Monday through Thursday for the third through sixth graders at West. And for those that miss out, the Bosworths could be back again as the Wolves have another football camp scheduled July 18-21. Interested parties for that event, which runs 6-9 p.m. each day and is open to students entering seventh through ninth grade, can register by going to: planoparks.org or calling Hughes at: 469-752-9800. The cost of the camp is $72 per person.

"Most of these kids aspire to play college ball or in the NFL someday," Hughes said, "so to see guys that have already accomplished that is definitely a plus for them."

More NFL players on West campus

Though he is not confirmed for the Wolves football camp, West has had another NFL player hanging around of late in alumnus Jordan Pugh.

Pugh, a 5-foot-11, 196-pound graduate of Texas A&M and safety for the Carolina Panthers has spent his time during the lockout training college players.
