Murder trial begins in Ford stabbing death
By Conner Hammett, chammett@acnpapers.com
An Allen resident accused of killing a man near Ford Middle School faced his first day of trial Monday.
Richard Garrett Hughes, 20, is accused of fatally stabbing 22-year-old Agha Faran Khan with a tire iron in November 2009 at the Ford Park basketball court following an altercation over court space.
A motion by the defense attorney Michael Curran to suppress certain evidence, including statements made by Hughes to police and evidence gathered from search warrants, was granted by District Judge Scott Becker since Allen police did not obtain an arrest warrant before making the arrest, the Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday.
Medina-Diaz and Rojas said in police interviews Khan struck Rojas with a cricket bat during the altercation, knocking him unconscious. Hughes responded by taking the tire iron from his car, which Medina-Diaz said he took from Hughes and threw on the ground.
Medina-Diaz said he and Hughes then tackled and began punching Khan, but neither man said they knew how he was stabbed. Medina-Diaz was arrested in connection with the murder the week of the incident along with Hughes but is not being charged.
