Alec Morris switches commitment to Alabama

Just three days before embarking on the start of fall practice and his final high school season, Allen senior quarterback Alec Morris has changed his collegiate plans.
Morris had verbally committed two weeks ago to Wake Forest, the first team to offer him a scholarship, but changed that commitment to Alabama on Friday.
"Alabama offered after Alec committed to Wake Forest," said Tom Westerberg, Allen head football coach. "He was out of town last week, got back and decided to make the switch today."
"I was in the car with (senior) Quinten Mobley and we came to a stop light and Alec and his dad pulled up next to us and Alec had an Alabama hat on," said Oliver Pierce, Allen junior wide receiver. "He said he got an offer from them, but I wasn't sure if he was joking or serious."
Morris made it known Friday he was serious by switching from Wake Forest to Alabama.
"I would probably do the same thing if I was in his situation," Pierce said. "I mean, going to Alabama is an opportunity you just can't pass up."
Westerberg had earlier noted that Morris attended an Alabama camp during the summer, but was not offered at the time.
"I think Alabama had originally told Alec, and told us, that they would decide by the end of July," Westerberg said, "so they pretty much stuck with their timeline."
Alabama's decision to offer Morris may have been due to its timeline or it could have been due to the decision of Jameis Winston. The quarterback from Hueytown, Ala., considered by many to be the best in the class of 2012, selected Florida State over Alabama on Wednesday.
That upset some in-state fans, but this Allen senior is no consolation prize.
In Morris, the Crimson Tide is picking up a 6-foot-3, 235-pound quarterback that threw for 2,533 yards, 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 2010, his first season as the Eagles primary signal caller.
"I think Alec will fit in well with Alabama," Westerberg said. "Then again, I think he will fit in well wherever he goes; he's got a lot of talent and is a competitor."
Pierce was quick to agree.
"Alec is a good kid," he said. "He never gets into trouble and has a heck of an arm."
Morris will be the latest Allen quarterback to go to the Southeastern Conference with former signal callers Casey Dick and Nathan Dick both orginally signing with Arkansas.
