Second time’s a charm: Frisco runs past McKinney in opener rematch

Revenge might not have been the No. 1 goal this week for Frisco, but the Raccoons certainly hadn’t forgotten about last season’s 42-8 loss to McKinney High in the regular season opener.
Frisco took advantage of its chance at redemption, running its way to a 39-26 victory over the Lions from Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium.
“Our ability to maintain possession and keep the pressure on them was the difference tonight,” said Vance Gibson, Frisco head coach. “I think we only punted once all game and that’s a tribute to everybody on the team.”
“[Harris] is a skilled athlete,” Gibson said. “There’s no doubt about that. He can definitely make plays.”
The senior ended the game with 246 yards rushing on 27 carries for a 9.11 yards per carry average. Harris also caught a 28 yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, one of only three pass attempts all night for Frisco.
“Frisco is a very well-coached team,” said Jeff Smith, McKinney head coach. “They’re a good football team and they played a great game tonight.”
McKinney wasn’t without a few standouts of its own.
Junior quarterback Robert Somborn threw for 273 yards on 30 attempts, completing 18 passes on the night. Somborn’s main target was senior wide receiver Quentin Casner who caught 10 balls for 200 yards and one of three Somborn touchdown tosses.
“Our passing game looked good at times,” Smith said. “That was a real positive about tonight. It wasn’t perfect by any means but there were a lot of positives.”
Another one of those positives for McKinney, and mostly overshadowed by Harris’s performance, was the rushing attack of junior running back Marquez Husband, who carried the ball 13 times for 159 yards.
However, Husband also fumbled the ball three times, losing one and contributing to half of the Lions’ turnovers on the night.
“[Husband] will be fine,” Smith said. “I’m not worried about him. We work on those things in practice and it’s something that he’ll fix before our next game.”
McKinney did get on the board first with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Somborn to junior receiver Jonathon Shannon.
However, the Raccoons proceeded to score 17 unanswered points and take an 11-point lead into halftime after a 45-yard field goal from senior kicker Kyle Fischer cleared the uprights with plenty of room to spare.
“I thought we played a tremendous game all-around,” Gibson said. “One of the only negatives I saw was that we had too many penalties. We’ll have to cut down on those.”
After receiving the ball to start the second half, the Lions marched down the field and Somborn eventually found Shannon for another touchdown strike, this time from 14 yards out.
The score made the contest 17-12 with 8:31 remaining in the third quarter.
That’s when Frisco took over control of the game for good, scoring two consecutive touchdowns at the 4:36 mark of the third and the second coming with only 14 seconds remaining in the frame.
The latter came on a 5-yard quarterback keeper from senior Eric Allen. The senior had 47 yards on eight carries during the game.
McKinney showed no signs of surrendering in the fourth, eventually trimming the deficit to 32-19 after a 51-yard touchdown strike from Somborn to Casner with 11:13 remaining in the game.
Harris would score his fourth and final touchdown of the night less than five minutes later on a 10-yard run up the middle that put the Raccoons up 39-19 and allowing Frisco to ultimately come away with a 39-26 victory.
“This is what preseason games are for,” Smith said. “They definitely got a push on us tonight. We’ve got to do a better job and it’s something that is fixable.”
The Lions will now look to even their mark at 1-1 with a road game against The Colony Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Frisco will carry its 1-0 record into Royse City Friday, where the Raccoons will play their first road game of the season. The two teams will kick off the action at 7:30 p.m.
