BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
With the District 8-5A season set to begin Friday, local volleyball teams have just a few matches remaining to take their final steps of preparation.
Marcus opens district at 7 p.m. Friday at Plano East and are coming off a 15th-place finish Aug. 25-27 at the Pearland Tournament of Champions.
The Lady Marauders won two of three games in pool play to qualify for the gold bracket in the prestigious tournament, where they were victorious in the first round before dropping their last four matches.
Marcus earned wins against Jersey Village (25-12, 25-8), Seven Lakes (25-17, 25-22) and Round Rock (25-20, 25-18). Losses came against Smithson Valley (25-19, 25-23), San Antonio Johnson (25-16, 25-14), Amarillo (26-24, 22-25, 25-11), Tomball (25-18, 25-14) and New Braunfels (25-17, 22-25, 25-19).
"Round Rock is a good team and that was probably our best match of the tournament," Liles said.
On Tuesday, the Lady Marauders came up short against Arlington Martin in four games.
"We were up-and-down against Martin as well," Liles said. "We did some things well but we need to do a better job of passing the ball and with our communication."
Lewisville, meanwhile, earned a sweep Tuesday against Newman Smith (25-17, 25-11, 25-18). The Lady Farmers open district at 7 p.m. Friday against Plano West.
Flower Mound opens 8-5A play at 7 p.m. Friday against reigning 5A state champ Hebron and are a coming off a big win Tuesday against Coppell.
