Boys basketball: Smart choice: Oklahoma State nabs Marcus stars
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
Marcus basketball players Marcus Smart and Phil Forte have made their collegiate decisions and both will be attending Oklahoma State following a visit to Stillwater Friday night.
"It was a very tough decision," Forte said. "The whole process was pretty overwhelming and I'm excited to have made my decision, even though it hasn't really set it in yet. Having to tell all of the great coaches that were recruiting me that I'm going to be going to Oklahoma State was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life."
"It's a big relief," Smart added. "Phil and I visited and sat down and prayed and it just felt right. Getting a chance to continue playing with Phil played a major role in my decision."
Smart and Forte aren't the only Marauders that will open the season with a clear mind as senior Nick Banyard has also made his collegiate choice.
The 6-foot-8 inch forward -- ranked as a three-star prospect according rivals.com and scout.com and 18th in the state among 2012 prospects by texashoops.com -- will be heading west to play for former Indiana University basketball star Steve Alford at the University of New Mexico.
Last season, the Lobos finished 22-13, including 8-8 in the Mountain West Conference. New Mexico lost in the semifinals of the MWC Tourney before advancing to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). Two years ago, the Lobos reached the second round the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
