Chief Wiggins: Carlos leads West to win

LEWISVILLE -- In the final seconds of Friday's District 8-5A opener, Lewisville made a big move downfield to threaten Plano West's lead.
But a move West made even before Week 4 arrived proved to be a little bigger.
The Wolves made use of a full game from senior Carlos Wiggins at running back to help beat Lewisville, 24-21, to move to 3-1 on the season (1-0 in district play). Lewisville drops to 2-2, 0-1.
"It's a good position, and I like it," Wiggins said. "It helps the team move. We were able to ground it and pound it. That's how we play."
However, West was seconds away from possibly not being able to take advantage of Wiggins' game.
Trailing 24-21 with 1:45 left, Lewisville quarterback Corey Duran marched his team to the Wolves 29-yard line by completing 7-of-8 passes in a hurry-up scheme. But once Lewisville got to the 29, West senior Bryce Cottrell tackled a scrambling Duran and the Farmers couldn't get a play off before time expired.
"It was a good drive," said Dick Olin, Lewisville head coach. "We just didn't have any timeouts. We used them to stop their drive earlier, which was good. We were trying for a Hail Mary and then a field goal to tie it, but they beat us in the backfield."
Lewisville was in that position because of a score by Wiggins.
With 5:50 left in the game, he sprinted 35 yards on the first play of his team's possession to take its lead. Wiggins' score erased what looked to be heroics for Lewisville's DeAndre Brown. Brown scored on a 64-yard run with 4:59 left in the third quarter, giving him 77 yards on the night and putting Lewisville ahead, 21-17.
Brown got Lewisville on the board first with a 30-yard pass from Duran in the opening quarter.
West answered with consecutive scores from senior quarterback Carson Smith, a 36-yard run and 1-yard run.
The Farmers had their share of mistakes and the time between the two scores was an example.
A key series early in the second quarter was costly as the Farmers fumbled the kickoff return following Smith's first touchdown. West recovered and, after taking advantage of a pass interference call, the Wolves scored their next touchdown less than two minutes later.
For the game, Lewisville was penalized 11 times for 85 yards.
Lewisville tied the contest at 14-14 with 10 seconds left in the second quarter when Duran connected with Jaden Wright on a 15-yard touchdown pass. West junior Zack Myer broke the tie with 6:10 left in the third quarter with a 34-yard field goal.
West head coach Mike Hughes said there were several key players for his team, including quarterback Travis Korry, who filled in temporarily for Smith when he was injured in the third quarter. Korry completed his only pass attempt for 53 yards to senior Nathan Orbach and ran four times for 14 yards.
"When our quarterback got hurt, Korry came in and did a great job," Hughes said. "We faced some adversity, and a lot of teams would have quit, but we kept fighting."
Smith returned and finished with 88 rushing yards and four completions for 27 yards. Sophomore running back Auston Anderson rushed 15 times for 50 yards.
"We played well offensively, defensively and on special teams," Olin said. "But they won a good game."
West returns to action Friday when it faces Plano East at 7:30 p.m. from Clark Stadium.
