Volleyball: Lady Jags notch key win
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
Flower Mound's volleyball team notched a marquee victory on the road Tuesday night as the Lady Jaguars knocked off Coppell in five games (26-28, 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-13).
The Cowgirls have played well in early pre-district tournaments, including taking third at the Duncanville Tournament of Champions and first at the Texas Open in Allen.
"That was a big one tonight," said Marci Brinkman, Flower Mound coach. "Our effort was just incredible and we showed a lot of heart. It was great to see and was a great win for us just a week and a half away from the start of district."
"I think we were kind of over-thinking some things early," she said. "But the girls relaxed and really started playing well. We did a great job of reacting, improving our communication and playing with discipline. And our blocking was as good as it has been all year."
Jordan Anderson led the Lady Jaguars with 29 kills, as well as a recording a pair of blocks in the final moments of the fifth set to help Flower Mound put the Cowgirls away. Sam Hawes and Madison Hoover posted 51 and 23 digs, respectively, while Andi Adams notched 13 kills, Briana Allmon posted 10 and Madeline Marr chipped in four. Erin Layne led the way with 30 assists, while Larissa Armstrong contributed 21.
"We're finally stepping up in the areas we need to," Brinkman said. "Every player was up yelling and it ws very intense. A lot of our errors were because we were aggressive going after balls, not because of mental mistakes. It's great to see the team play to its potential."
Flower Mound was coming off a busy weekend at the Pearland Volleyball Classic. The Lady Jagaurs qualified for the Silver bracket and took fifth, finishing 37th of 84 squads overall at the prestigious tournament with a record of 5-3.
Flower Mound recorded wins against Atascocita (25-17, 20-25, 25-21), Highland Park (25-12, 25-22), Incarnate Word (25-22, 26-24), San Antonio Brandeis (14-25, 25-22, 26-24) and Clear Brook (25-17, 25-23). The Lady Jaguars dropped matches against eventual champion Lake Travis (25-7, 25-14), Arlington Martin (25-25, 19-25, 25-18) and Deer Park (25-22, 30-29).
"Overall, it was a great effort all-around," Brinkman said. "We had a lot of players step up at a lot of different times."
Allmon led the team in kill percentage, while Layne led in assists. Brinkman also credited Hawes and Hoover for their defensive play.
Marcus also competed in Pearland and compiled a record of 3-5. The Lady Marauders earned wins against Jersey Village (25-12, 25-8), Seven Lakes (25-17, 25-22) and Round Rock (25-20, 25-18). The team dropped matches against Smithson Valley (25-19, 25-23), San Antonio Johnson (25-16, 25-14), Amarillo (26-24, 22-215, 25-11), Tomball (25-15, 25-14) and New Braunfels (25-17, 22-25, 25-19).
While Flower Mound and Marcus were competing in Pearland, Lewisville had a solid performance during the weekend at the Creekview Tournament. The Lady Farmers came up short against the Lady Mustangs and Rowlett, while recording wins over Life High School, Hockaday and South Grand Prairie.
"It was a good tournament for us and we got better during it," said Jay Samide, Lewisville coach. "We passed the ball well, but we also found some things we need to get better at and one of those things is finishing off matches. We can't let up at the end against anyone."
Kristyn Nicholson received all-tournament honors for Lewisville.
"The girls know what they need to work and they believe the can fix the mistakes," Samide said. "We just need to settle in a groove and get going before district starts."
