Volleyball: District 8-5A play continues
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
For the second consecutive meeting, Plano East's volleyball team gave Marcus all it could handle.
This time, however, the Lady Marauders managed to pull out the win (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-7) and after Allen defeated Plano Senior Tuesday, Marcus (5-3) is now in a three-way tie for second in District 8-5A with Plano and Plano West. The Lady Marauders, Lady Wolves and Lady Wildcats trail Hebron (7-1) by two matches for first. Marcus previously lost against East in its 8-5A opener Sept. 9 (25-16, 12-25, 25-18, 25-22).
"[Plano East] certainly gives us all we want," said Cristie Liles, Marcus coach. "They're a scrappy team and we helped them out by making a lot of unforced errors. We had service errors, double-hits, everything. But we found a way to get the win."
"We saw some holes we were trying to hit to and we managed to do a good job of finding those holes," she said. "But we have to do a better job of keeping the ball in play and playing better at the net. We weren't at our best there and that's why the scores were the way they were. We need to keep working on our blocking and communication."
Regan McGuire and Lauren Douglass led the team with 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while Mattie Rainwater contributed 19 assists. Lindsay Sales and Kelsey Pry posted 16 digs each.
The Lady Marauders also received improved play from Liz Fortado -- who is still returning from an injury -- while Michelle Toro posted five kills, including terminations on the final two points of the match to seal Marcus' win.
"Liz is starting to come around and she really started to play better in the fourth and fifth sets when we really needed it," Liles said. "And I was happy for Michelle to really come through in the fifth set to close the match."
While Marcus is fighting for second, Flower Mound (4-4) is just one game back and in fifth after its four-match win streak in district was snapped by Hebron Tuesday (25-20, 28-26, 25-17).
"We didn't play so good," said Marci Brinkman, Flower Mound coach. "It definitely wasn't our best night. We had way too many errors and they came in all ways. Serving, blocking and on the attack. We needed to make better decisions and mix up the attack more."
Brinkman added the squad may have lacked focus and been a little timid at the start of the match.
"We still have a bright outlook though," she said. "Hebron is a tough team. We're disappointed because we know we can play better, but there were still positives. I thought we did a great job of hustling and keeping points going and we won a lot of those rallies."
Game 2, in particular, was a "hard-fought and exciting game".
Jordan Anderson had a solid match for the Lady Jaguars, leading the squad with 22 kills and 10 digs.
Erin Layne recorded a team-high 21 assists, while Amberli Cluff and Andi Adams chipped in three blocks apiece. Austin Lay contributed seven digs in the third set.
"We need to recover more quickly in the match but I think we'll bounce back fine," Brinkman said.
While Marcus and Flower Mound are battling for playoff spots, Lewisville is still seeking its first win in district.
The Lady Farmers came up short Tuesday against West (25-17, 25-5, 25-12).
On Friday, Marcus defeated Flower Mound (TBD), while Lewisville lost against Allen (TBD).
