Tennis: Marcus locks up second seed

Published: Saturday, October 8, 2011 1:46 AM CDT
With just one regular season match remaining, Marcus' tennis team has already secured the No. 2 seed from District 8-5A with the tournament slated to begin Oct. 17.

The Marauders close the regular season Tuesday against Hebron and know they will face the Hawks in the first round of the tournament.

"It doesn't change how we are going to approach the match in any way," said Kelly Langdon, Marcus coach.

The Marauders -- ranked No. 13 in the state -- head into the final week of the regular season after earning a sweep of Lewisville Tuesday and have lost just once in district (against Plano West, 11-8). The Wolves are unbeaten in district and have dropped just one match this season (to Highland Park).

"I thought we played well," Langdon said. "The kids continued what they've been doing all season. They came out very focused and ready to play in doubles and carried it into the singles portion of the match.

"We feel pretty good about where we are at being the No. 2 seed no matter what happens against Hebron. It's been a long season with us getting going a couple of weeks before school started. We really can't wait to get to the district tournament."

Lewisville, meanwhile, continues to improve.

"I liked what I saw during doubles," said Wade Zimmerman, Lewisville coach. "We've probably been a little stronger on the boys side than on the girls, but our girls have been without our No. 1 player for a couple of weeks, which changes things."

While Marcus has been rolling along, Flower Mound had a tough time with the Wolves as West defeated the Jaguars by sweep. The squad did manage to split sets in a trio of matches before coming up short in the tiebreakers, including in boys singles, boys doubles and girls singles. Flower Mound's Andrew Eurek forced a breaker against Adam Mlynarczyk (3-6, 6-3, 10-5), while Armand Behroozi came up short against Maddy Thompson (6-4, 1-6, 10-7) and the boys doubles team of Brian Lee and Aaron Johnson also lost a third-set breaker (6-4, 3-6, 10-7).
