Volleyball: Lady Jags firing on all cylinders

Published: Saturday, October 15, 2011 1:46 AM CDT
Both the Marcus and Flower Mound volleyball teams took positive steps toward securing playoff spots from District 8-5A Tuesday as both squads earned victories.

The Lady Marauders (6-4) and Lady Jaguars are tied for second, one game ahead of Plano West and Plano East. The top four teams in the district advance to the playoffs. Defending champion Hebron (9-1) is in control of first.

Flower Mound won for the sixth time in seven matches Tuesday, earning a sweep over Plano Senior (25-13, 26-24, 25-16). The Lady Wildcats had previously topped Flower Mound by sweep on Sept. 16.

"The girls played excellent," said Marci Brinkman, Flower Mound coach. "We had everything clicking and the girls played with great discipline in all aspects of the match."

The Lady Jaguars were coming off a sweep of Marcus (25-23, 27-25, 25-22) Oct. 7 -- another team that swept Flower Mound in the first half of district.

Jenna Allen led the Lady Jaguars with 15 kills, while Briana Allmon recorded 12 and Amberli Cluff and Andi Adams each contributed six. Megan Mont chipped in five kills. Defensively, Samantha Hawes led the way with 26 digs while Madison Hoover recorded 10. Erin Layne and Larissa Armstrong had 22 and 19 assists, respectively.

"The girls were amazing," Brinkman said. "Marcus played a great match, too, and I think it was a fun match to watch. Everyone on the court was working hard. It was a big win for us."

While the Lady Marauders were swept by Flower Mound on Friday, they responded Tuesday with a win over West (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21) to complete a sweep of the Lady Wolves in district.

"It was a good win for us," said Cristie Liles, Marcus coach. "We had better energy and did a much better job with our blocking. It was the best we've played in the past three or four matches."

Liles said a majority of the squad contributed.

"Regan (McGuire) and Lauren (Douglass) were hitting the ball well and Liz (Fortado) really had a solid hitting game," she said. "Mattie Rainwater played great defense for us, too."

Lewisville, meanwhile, is still seeking its first win in district after falling Oct. 7 against Allen (25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15) and Tuesday to Hebron (25-10, 25-17, 25-9).
