Poteet punches ticket to volleyball playoffs
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@acnpapers.com
It has been an up and down ride through the 15-4A season for the Poteet volleyball team.
But when the Pirates needed it most, they came through.
Poteet won a pair of matches during the past week to finish with a 10-6 record in district play. That was good enough to finish in a tie for third place with Corsicana and punch a ticket to the postseason.
Poteet had posted a 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Ennis on Friday to put themselves in good position.
However, standing in the way was a Forney team that was only one game back in the standings and could have forced a tie for fourth place with a win.
The Jackrabbits played like a team fighting for their playoff lives, bouncing back from an opening-game loss with a pair of victories.
But the Pirates responded when they needed to, rallying back to claim a 25-17, 25-27, 12-25, 25-16, 15-10 victory.
Also on Tuesday, Waxahachie knocked off Red Oak in a 25-2, 25-16, 25-20 win to force a tie for the 15-4A championship.
West Mesquite has long been eliminated from playoff contention, but the Wranglers ended the season on a high note with a pair of victories.
West Mesquite posted a 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 win over Lancaster on Tuesday and a 16-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18 victory over Terrell last Friday.
