McKinney Charter School Sees Strong Interest
Local politicians support community charter school

The Imagine International Academy of North Texas, a public tuition-free charter school scheduled to open in the fall of 2012 in McKinney, has been flooded with inquiries from local families since the start of its admissions application period on November 1st, 2011.
The Academy plans to serve approximately 950 students in grades K-9 for the 2012-2013 school year, growing by one grade each year to become a K-12 school, and will offer a rigorous college preparatory curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) educational framework. In Texas, students graduating with passing scores on the International Baccalaureate high school Diploma are eligible for a minimum of 24 hours of college credit at any public institution of higher education.
"To date, we have received over 700 applications for admission to the Academy," said Julia Brady, Central Administration Officer for the school, adding that "it looks like many of our grades, particularly at the elementary level, will be going to lottery." The school plans to accept approximately 100 students per grade, and if more applications are received than space is available, all applicants will be entered into a random lottery in order to determine admission to the Academy.
The school recently held a groundbreaking ceremony at its new location on Virginia Parkway in McKinney, attended by Texas State Representative Ken Paxton, Collin County Commissioner Joe Jaynes, and McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller. Representative Paxton presented the school with a resolution on behalf of the state of Texas, and Mayor Loughmiller shared his belief that the school’s internationally-recognized program of education would help attract additional global businesses and their employees to McKinney, strengthening the city’s reputation.
“It is gratifying to see all of our work over the past five years coming to fruition,” said Ann Carrell, board president for the Academy, adding that “our future students and their parents will now play a very important role in developing this school into a community.”
Applications for admission will continue to be accepted until March 1st, 2012 from residents of the school’s primary geographic boundary which includes the school districts of McKinney, Allen, Frisco, Prosper, Celina, Melissa, Princeton, and Lovejoy.
