Womack turns the Paige on Lewisville in second-half outburst

LEWISVILLE -- For nearly the entirety of the first half, Lewisville's girls basketball team held the advantage over state-ranked Plano West in both teams' District 8-5A openers.

The third quarter, however, belonged to the Lady Wolves.

West's pressure-based defense forced the Farmers into a bevy of turnovers and, coupled with a 3-point barrage, the Lady Wolves went on a 24-8 spurt en route to a 66-50 victory.

Lewisville had raced out to a 13-2 lead early in the first quarter and trailed by just one at the break.

"The first quarter, we didn't look like we were into it for some reason," said Don Patterson, Plano West head coach. "I don't know why, but we didn't come out with the same intensity that we've been having. But Lewisville did and they really took it to us. We slowly started getting into it in the second and made a few shots. Then we started playing a little defense and in the third quarter our trap started getting to them a little bit. And we just went crazy on 3-point shots."

West hit five of its 10 3-pointers in the third, including a pair from senior Paige Womack, who netted nine of her team-high 16 points in the quarter.

Trailing, 30-27, midway through the third, Womack sunk consecutive long-range jumpers to put the Lady Wolves in front, 33-32, and followed with an and-1 on an assist from junior Devri Owens for a four-point advantage. Womack then repaid the favor to Owens, who knocked in a three of her own to put West on its way up 39-32. Following a Lewisville timeout, junior Allison Staley and Owens poured in two more from long distance for a 45-32 advantage. The Lady Wolves had six different players convert 3-pointers.

"Wow," Patterson said. "Five threes in a quarter will help out a lot. We've got good shooters, but sometimes we fall in love with that shot. Once one or two of our girls made a couple, everyone got comfortable and started shooting. Then again, I think Lewisville got a little tired and couldn't get out on us as quickly and we had more time to relax and shoot."

A Lewisville squad that dressed just eight players came out of the gates quickly.

However, the pressure of West's defense began to take its toll.

"I was pretty pleased with how we played," said Charlotte Jones, Lewisville head coach. "The score doesn't really reflect what we did and how we played. The turnovers just really killed us. That was the story of the game for us. When you turn the ball over and you're running out of gas ... it just got away from us."

Jada Butts opened the contest with a pair of free throws and, after buckets by Maya Chitman and Maggie Simpson, converted her lone three to put the Farmers up, 9-2. Lewisville's largest lead of the night was 13-2.

After committing just three turnovers in the first quarter, Lewisville committed seven in the second and 13 in the third before finishing the contest with 25. The Lady Wolves, meanwhile, had 11 turnovers for the game.

"We got them into more trap situations," Patterson said. "Not only were we trapping, but we were moving in and out of the trap and getting back in the correct position. That allowed us to get out in transition more and then we can hit those threes because we are in more of a rhythm."

Trailing, 16-10, West rattled off seven straight points to open the second, capped by a three from Womack off an inbounds pass. The teams settled into a back-and-forth quarter before junior Grace Horn set up Womack for a runner at the buzzer to send West to the break leading, 25-24.

"We told our girls at halftime that Lewisville was beating us at our own game," Patterson said. "They were beating us down the court and that's not what we want to see. Every once in a while it's going to happen, but they were doing it consistently there in the first and even into the second a little bit."

Simpson and Laurin Clark chipped in eight points apiece for Lewisville, while West had 11 players score, including 10 from Owens, nine from senior Kiran Lakhian and eight from Staley.

The Lady Wolves continue at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Plano East.

"Every win in district is a big one," Patterson said. "And we've got another one Friday against East."
