A man from El Salvador with a lengthy criminal record Wednesday was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the aggravated robbery of a McKinney convenience store.
Jose Ruben Alvarenga, 36, of Corrunchas, El Salvador, was found guilty and sentenced by a jury, which also imposed a $10,000 fine.
A spokesperson in the office of Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said that on Nov. 18, 2007, Alvarenga and an accomplice shot through the ceiling of the Tres Amigos convenience store in McKinney. They proceeded to steal $400 out of the cash register while they held store clerk Beatrez Granados at gunpoint.
Sgt. A. P. Davidson of the Texas Rangers, who offices in McKinney, was the chief witness at the trial. He said Alvarenga had also been involved in a string of robberies in North Texas. Davidson spent up to two months investigating Alvarenga and others in connection with the robberies.
Members of the McKinney, Plano, Frisco and Dallas police departments also participated in the investigations and in connecting Alvarenga with robberies in the area.
Justin Johnson and Lesley Sylvan, Collin County assistant criminal district attorneys, prosecuted the case. Visiting District Judge James Fry presided.
Alvarenga is also serving three 20-year sentences after being convicted of aggravated robberies in Dallas.
