WEB EXCLUSIVE: Wolves exit hockey nationals after shutout loss
BY Matt Welch, mwelch@starlocalnews.com
The Plano West hockey team let a tiebreaker decide its fate at the USA Hockey High School National Championships.
On the heels of a 4-0 shutout loss to Regis Jesuit (Col.) Friday afternoon, the Wolves found themselves on the wrong end of a three-way tie to end its run through the national tournament at 1-2 for the second straight year.
West entered the day well ahead of its Pool A2 counterparts -- North Broward (Fla.) and Newark (Ohio) -- in the scoring ledger with 10 goals scored to Broward's five.
The Wolves controlled their destiny with a win but ultimately fell short against unbeaten Regis, which scored a pair of goals in both the first and second periods en route to the shutout victory.
West found itself on the receiving end of goals at even strength, in power-play situations and even a short-handed score to cap the scoring with 1:06 left in the second period.
The loss denied the Wolves a spot in the quarterfinals and ended their national tournament run in Salt Lake City. It capped a 2011-12 campaign that saw West record its second consecutive AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League State Championship.
