After one day of competition at the UIL Class 5A Region I Tournament in Lubbock, Southlake Carroll's girls golf team found itself in the midst of a three-way tie for first with only the top two teams qualifying for state.
But when the dust settled after Day 2, the Lady Dragons found themselves as the odd-man out.
Carroll finished third with a team score of 611, well off the pace of first-place Allen (594) and second-place El Paso Eastwood (598). All three teams posted scores of 306 on the first day before Allen erupted by shooting even par on the second day, which set a program record for a postseason round.
"And if you look at those scores, I think they speak for themselves."
Right behind Carroll in fourth was Coppell (613), which posted a 312 on Day 1 and 301 on Day 2.
Individual performers for the Cowgirls included Chaithra Katamneni in seventh (148), Taylor Icenberger in ninth (149), Tiffany Breitenwischer in 24th (156), Sol Lee in 40th (160) and Aja Zarrehparvar in 50th (168).
For the Lady Dragons, Maddy Rayner placed 15th (152), Amanda Juntti took 20th (154), Emily Grabarkewitz finished 22nd (155) and Allison Bock (157) and Alex Celli (157) tied for 28th. Adriana Morillo also competed individually for Carroll and earned 17th (153), while Allen's Maddie Szeryk won the gold (143). Midland Lee's Libby Thomas (144) and Plano West's Megan Thothong (146) qualified individually. Hebron's Katherina Kang placed 53rd (169).
Like the girls, the Dragons finished third as a team on the boys side (592). Mansfield took first (582) with Keller in second (588).
Carroll did advance an individual, however, as Corbin Kasten moves on to state after tying for fourth (145). Allen's Justin Newby (140) and Abilene Cooper's Cory Churchman (145) also qualified.
Rounding out the Dragons competitors were Vince Martino in 11th (148), Matt Gilchrest in 21st (150), Hunter Glenn in 27th (151) and Spencer Santora in 28th (152).
Coppell's Albert Lo posted rounds of 78 and 82 (160) to place 62nd.
At the Class 4A Region I Tournament at Diamondback Golf Club in Abilene, Newman Smith's Eji Kwon continued her solid run, finishing second individually to qualify for state. Kwon had previously won the district tourney and will return to Austin to compete at state for a second consecutive season.
In Abilene, Kwon carded rounds of 72 and 77 (149) to finish just behind Grace Choi of Woodrow Wilson (145). Creekview's Paige Nelson also gave a solid effort, finishing fifth (155). However, only the top two individuals from non-qualifying teams advance to state.
Frisco Wakeland (668) and Frisco Liberty (670) finished first and second, respectively, in the team standings.
On the boys side, Highland Park (595) and Cedar Ridge (615) claimed the team spots. Smith's Nick Hampton, meanwhile, fired scores of 93 and 88 (181).
