Poteet boys, girls take third at 15-4A track and field meet
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
It is never easy competing in the same district as a traditional power.
That is the chore that both Poteet and West Mesquite faced at the 15-4A track and field meet last week when they and the rest of the district had to contend with Lancaster, whose girls and boys teams have won multiple state championships in recent years.
But while the Tigers did the expected in sweeping the two team championships, the Pirates and Wranglers each enjoyed their share of highlights and will be sending several athletes to the regional competition.
Lancaster won nine of the 11 running events, including a pair of relays, to finish with 207 points. Forney took second with a total of 116.
Nwegbo stood out even with all the surrounding talent. She was second in the 100, long jump and triple jump in addition to a third-place effort in the 200.
Evie Reavis earned a regional spot by taking second in the 1,600 and nearly had another with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200. Raegan Shaw was second in the high jump, while Brooke Bush and Kelsey Stewart placed third in the shot put and discus, respectively.
The Poteet 800 relay team is also headed to the regional meet after crossing the finish line in third place.
The Pirate boys nearly rallied to take second place, but their total of 80 points fell just short of Red Oak, who ended with 83. Lancaster swept the three relays and won four more individual events to claim the team title with a score of 199.
Like the girls team, Poteet won no gold medals, but did have several top-three finishes.
Patrick Davis was second in the 200 and fourth in the 100, while Carlos Nuno was the runner-up in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200.
Rounding out the regional qualifiers were Malvon Brown, who was second in the discus, Steven Martinez, who was third in the 800, Jarrett Ingram, who was third in the high jump, and Greg Meek, who won bronze in the long jump.
The West Mesquite boys won a pair of events to help them finish fifth with a total of 66 points.
Eldridge Massington blazed past the field in the 100 meters, winning in a time of 10.67 seconds, while Jarrell Randle won the high jump after clearing 6-4.
Ignacio Ramirez was the lone two-event qualifier for the Wranglers after taking second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600. Raashaan Reason took third place in the 200, while the 400 relay team finished second.
The top three finishers in each event qualify for the Class 4A Region II track and field meet, which will take place on Apr. 27-28 at Maverick Stadium in Arlington.
