When grade-schooler Londyn Ogletree appeared before the Prosper town council at their regular meeting on April 10, she was already an old hand at addressing the group.
The 8-year-old Rucker Elementary second-grader had addressed the council several weeks before, giving her opinion on a neighborhood park plan. And, at the April 10 meeting, she continued on the same theme, but this time she and her five-year-old brother Kingston, put their money squarely behind their words.
Londyn presented two $500 checks to Mayor Smith for the Windmill Playground fundraising campaign on her own behalf and that of her brother. And, it wasn’t anyone else’s money she was conveying, it was money the two had earned for a trip to Disney World.
Shelly Van Blarcum is their grandmother, and she said it was all Londyn’s idea.
“We have a deal with the kids that allows them to earn what we call ‘Disney dollars’ by doing chores and other activities, like trying new foods, picking up after themselves, etc.,” she said.
It was those Disney dollars that Londyn and Kingston used for their donation to the community-build playground.
“After she told me her idea to donate the money, an idea she got from participating in the Pennies for the Playground program at school, I suggested we make an appointment with Mr. (Mike) Land, the Town Manager,” she said.
But, Londyn would have none of that.
“She told me that she would rather speak to the council directly because, in her words, ‘they already know me and like me.’ So, how could I argue with that?” she laughed.
The $1,000 donation will be added to the growing total, now only about $25,000 under the $250,000 goal.
Windmill Playground is a community-build project that starts construction on May 14 and concludes with the grand opening on the evening of Sunday, May 20. Still needed are volunteer workers for all manner of construction and non-construction tasks. To volunteer for a work shift, visit www.windmillplayground.com.
