The Celina Independent School District plans to offer dual credit courses from both Collin College and Grayson County College. The district wants to offer both zero hour and daytime dual credit courses. Zero hour classes begin before the regular school day begins.
“Some students are not able to be in zero hour courses,” O'Dell said. “We looked at other venues to see what we could come up with. We want to have Collin College do zero hour courses and Grayson fill in the gaps. We are hoping we have a good relationship with Collin College. They're our first choice.”
CISD Secondary Curriculum Director Lizzy Kloiber said the district wanted to offer dual credit courses during the day and Grayson will send someone five days a week. Classes in criminal justice, sociology and psychology will be provided by Grayson.
CISD board trustee Pam Peters expressed concern about Grayson County College courses costing more than Collin College courses.
“We want to give our students and our parents every opportunity to make the best decision,” Celina High School Principal Rick DeMasters said. “We want to give them as many choices as possible.”
Celina school board members Lance Haynes and Tim Looper said they wanted to make sure that the district's relationship with Collin College was not damaged.
“I hope we haven't put the picture out there that we have abandoned Collin College,” O'Dell said.
Collin College Board of Trustee member Stacy Arias and Provost Brenda Kihl also attended the meeting. Kihl is provost of the Collin College Preston Ridge campus in Frisco.
Celina Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeran Akers and chamber board president Todd McCally were also at the meeting.
After the meeting Interim Superintendent O'Dell told Arias, “We don't just want a relationship with Collin College. We want a partnership.”
Arias said she thought the interests of Collin College had not been properly addressed in the whole discussion.
“We'll see how it develops,” she told the “Celina Record” on Tuesday. I trust the decision of the ISD board. The ball is still in their court.”
Dual credit courses was a discussion item on the agenda. No decision was made at the board meeting.
In other matters the CISD board approved an authorization to post a notice to fill the vacant position of district superintendent.
The board also approved a policy allowing eighth grade students to take both the STAAR math and EOC algebra I state assessment and waived the requirements to count the EOC exams as 15 percent of the students' final grade.
The school calendar for the 2012 – 2013 school year was approved as well as a resolution concerning high stakes, standardized testing of Texas public school students. The resolution asks the Texas legislature to re-examine the public school accountability system in Texas.
The board also approved teacher contract renewals.
