“Being on the square is extremely important,” Celina Chamber Jeran Akers said.
It also allows the Chamber to save on storage costs because the building includes a mini-warehouse. There is also meeting space for the board of directors and to hold small events. A home business that joins the Chamber can hold a ribbon cutting at the Chamber of Commerce offices.
Prior to the Preston Road location the Chamber shared space at the Celina Heritage Museum on Pecan Street.
Akers said that while he would like to see the Chamber some day have its own building, for now the Walnut Street location is a permanent home for the Celina Chamber of Commerce.
He and Chamber board members are busy with final preparations for the annual Chamber banquet on Saturday, March 31 at Hurricane Creek County Club in Anna.
Actor Burton Gilliam is the featured speaker. Gilliam, a former firefighter, lives in Allen. He is best remembered for his roles in “Blazing Saddles” and “Paper Moon.”
Awards will be presented for Newsmaker of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Community Volunteer of the Year, New Business of the Year and Business of the Year.
The Employee of the Year will also receive an award from the city of Celina. An outstanding student from each Celina school campus will also be honored.
Newsmaker of the Year nominees are the Celina Girls Softball Team, the Chamber of Commerce Balloon festival and the Centennial Celebration on the Square.
Citizen of the Year nominees are Brenda Goodell, Rex Glendenning and Dago Rodriguez. Community Volunteer of the Year are Heather Zacny, Ralph O'Dell and Monica Rooker.
New Business of the Year nominees are McDonald's, Skinner Chiropractic and Southern Kitchen.
Business of the Year nominees are Texas Star Bank, Automation Integration, Lucy's and Papa Gallos.
Tickets are still available for Saturday's banquet. Visit the Chamber website at www.celinachamber.org or call 972-382-3300.
