New lights coming for Celina's streets

Under the terms of a tentative agreement which has been worked out between the City of Celina and Texas Power & Light Company, a vastly improved street lighting system will be put into operation in Celina soon.

Six new mercury vapor lamps will be installed on Celina's public square, mounted on modern metal standards. These new lamps will replace older wood-pole mounted mercury vapor lamps which will be moved to locations adjacent to Celina churches. One of the pole-mounted lamps will be removed to a location at the east end of Elm Street, and another will be at the bridge at the east end of Oak Street, in the "flats," according to City Hall.

In addition, new mercury lamps will be installed on poles on Highway 289 all the way through Celina at each street intersection, which should result in an extremely well-lighted street.

The Texas Power & Light Company is furnishing the complete lights and standards, with the City of Celina agreeing to pay for electricity consumed and to bear the expense of replacing lamps as they burn out.

Blackfriars to present Hansel and Gretel

An adventure concerning two mistreated tykes, a trail of breadcrumbs and a witch living in a cottage of pure yum-yum, is being re-enacted for saucer-eyed youth this Friday and Saturday nights in the Celina High School auditorium at 8 p.m. by the Blackfriars Club.

The one-hour, three-act play includes the following cast: Hansel, Danny Kelly; Gretel, Helen Kindle and Karol Grumbles (who will each play the part on alternate nights); Ernst, the father, by Gus Stelzer and Bob Blaine; Katrin, the "mean" stepmother, by Sue Phelps; the Wood Pixie, Barbara Graham; Trudi, the cat by Izzie Phelps, and the witch, Virginia Graham.

The production staff includes Allan Smith, director and adapter; Mary Moore, stage manager; Sue Luttrell, lighting; clowns; Louie Maier and Carl Heogerl; sound effects, Bobbie Shedd; sets, Jerry Moore and Joyce Stambaugh, and tickets, David Tolleson and Mike Bratcher.

Hansel and Gretel will be this year's major Blackfriars production. The organization staged a one-act play, "Betsy's Report Card" earlier in the school year for the PTA. The club was organized three years ago at the high school for the purpose of promoting drama in the school and community.

Although the club is a nonprofit organization, it will be necessary to charge 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults to help defray expenses.

The players will take Hansel and Gretel to Sherman's Little Theatre Saturday, March 17, for performances at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Presbyterian Church

Sunday morning at 10:55 the sermon subject will be "Why Worship God?" On Sunday morning, March 18, the sermon will be on "How to Worship God."

These sermons will be constructive and down-to-earth practical Christianity. All members are urged to be present and visitors are cordially welcome.

Four men file for two school board vacancies

A contest shaped up in candidacies for trustees of Celina Independent School District this week as four names were filed for two vacancies on the school board.

Filed last week was the name of Bob King, farmer. Later candidacies filed were those of Lewis Robinson, farmer; James R. McIlroy, automobile dealer, and M.L. Bull.

Election date is the first Saturday in April and deadline for filing is March 8.

Trustees Herman Robinson and John Laney, whose terms expire, are not running for re-election.

Five Celina girls win places on district team

Coaches in 13-A basketball made their choices last week of the best players in the league and the CHS girls cagers captured five places, more than any school had done in recent years.

Winning a place on the boys' all-district team was David Tolleson, Celina.

Celina girls placing on the mythical best team for all-district were Mary Svoboda (for the third year), Bobbie Shedd, Mary Moore, Izzie Phelps, and Sue Powell.

All of the CHS girls given this honor are seniors but Sue Powell, a freshman. The girls team this year won 20 and lost 9 games and captured the district crown with a fine 8-0 schedule. They lost out in the first round of the regional meet last week to Fannindel, who went on to capture the regional meet and are playing in the state finals in Austin this week.

Coach Allen Smith said this week he thought it was a high honor for the girls in CHS to be placed on the district team.

"To have the respect of the opposing coaches is a high honor for the girls indeed. I think there were about 75 girls participating in the district play this year."

Club seeks slogan to boost Celina

Want to help advertise your home town and make yourself a piece of change, to boot?

Then submit, in five words or less, a slogan boosting Celina, to the Lions Club's contest for a bumper strip slogan. The winning slogan will be chosen by members of the City Council, and the person submitting it will receive a cash prize of $10, paid by the Lions Club.

Bring or mail your entries to the City Hall. Remember, five words or less.

The winning slogan will be printed on strips of highly colored paper to be affixed to auto bumpers.

Lions Club committee handling details of the promotion consists of T.A. Grissom, Raymond Oliver, and Clint Carey Jr.

Two file for mayor, three for alderman

When filing deaadline had passed Saturday night, two names had been filed as candidates for Mayor of Celina, and three names filed for three vacancies on the City Council.

Candidates for Mayor are the incumbent, mayor G.V. Bray, and Roy Strickland, cleaning plant operator.

Running for three places on the council are Lynn E. Stambaugh, cashier of the First State Bank (for re-election); W. R. Baldridge, manager of the Kimbell Milling Company's interests in Celina, and Leon Howard, employee of Chance-Vought.

The election has been ordered for Tuesday, April 3.

Help neighbors first urges Collin legislator

W.T. Dungan, Collin County's representative in the Texas legislature, thinks it's time that the U.S. Devotes some time and effort to helping our neighbors and friends in Latin America, particularly our neighbor across the Rio Grande, Mexico.

"We have done more for Yugoslavia, a Communist country, than we have for all of Latin America," Dungan declared in a talk Tuesday at the luncheon meeting of Celina's Booster Club.

Dungan and several other members of the legislature made a recent trip to Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, a town of about 80,000 people, 270 miles south of Eagle Pass, Texas. The Collin legislator addressed a session of the legislature of the State of Coahuila in the capitol of Saltillo.

"As an example of a way the U.S. Could help our Mexican neighbors, the beautiful city of Saltillo, located in an arid area, is plagued by recurrent water shortages. Our help to Saltillo in solving this problem would be of immense value and the act of a good neighbor."

Dungan is chairman of the legislature's school textbook committee, which has had numerous hearings recently in various parts of the state.

"We have had one particularly interesting witness at one of our hearings," Dungan said, "the wife of a Yugoslav underground leader who warned us what the Communists will do when they get power. She told us the Communists took all of the books out of their schools which had any reference to God or religion and taught the children to pray to Stalin instead of God."

Mr. Dungan was accompanied to Celina by A.D. McGee of McKinney.
