Girls Scouts, community deliver a touch of home to troops

Published: Tuesday, April 10, 2012 12:10 PM CDT
On Thursday, the Southlake community came together to deliver a "touch of home" to troops overseas.

After selling troop to troop cookies, 50 Girl Scouts helped deliver nearly 650 boxes of cookies to White's Chapel United Methodist Church (WCUM), who then send the cookies in a care package to troops overseas. This year, the Southlake troops sold close to 2425 packages of troop to troop cookies. They sold over 41,000 packages overall, but the troop to troop cookies are intended for men and women in the military.

Every year, during the Girl Scout's cookie sale, scouts have the opportunity to sell "virtual" packages of cookies through the troop to troop program. The girls sell a "virtual" package of cookies, and GSUSA delivers them to troops stationed here and abroad.

"The reason I wanted the girls to help deliver the cookies was to make the virtual sales more concrete to them. I have two volunteers who are retired navy officers, and their son is overseas in the Marines. They told me how much he enjoyed it when they would send him Girl Scout cookies because it's a touch of home for him. I wanted the girls to see that the virtual sales really go to someone," said Lily Tapp, service unit cookie manager for the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains. "I wanted them to see that the sales do go to someone and to see and touch the cookies that would go overseas."

The Girl Scouts met at Variosystems where the cookies are stored and loaded the cookies into Susan Tanner's car for WCUM. Tanner is in charge of getting the cookies to the troops. Tapp also invited Bill and Janet Stewart to the event. Both served in the Navy for 30 years and were high ranking officers.

"When the retired veterans spoke to the girls, a lot of the moms and older girls got emotional. It touched everyone," Tapp said.

Southlake is home to 46 Girl Scout troops and more than 300 girls who sell cookies. The following troops participated in Thursday's event: Troops represented: 4002, 4008, 4007, 4026, 4021, 4033, 4028, 4005, 4052, 4054, 4035, 4036, 4048, 4030, 4053 and 4034.

"We think Girl Scouts instills a lot of confidence, and we want people to see that Girl Scouts is more than selling cookies. Scouts also benefit the troops," Tapp said.
