Terrell hopes to accomplish more
By Chris Roark, croark@starlocalnews.com
Mayor John Terrell has a list.
On that list are several items he would like to see Southlake accomplish, and he hopes to oversee those initiatives while serving another term.
Terrell filed for re-election Feb. 6 in hopes of serving a second term. He was first elected mayor in 2009 and has been on the city council since 2004.
“I still care about the future of this city,” Terrell said on why he has chosen to run for re-election. “I would like to participate in the achievements and the vision of Southlake. There are a number of things I want to accomplish with the help of the rest of the council, the city staff and the residents. This isn’t just a one-man job.”
Atop the list of priorities is a multipurpose community facility proposed for the city. Though a definite location hasn’t been determined, Terrell said it could end up near Bicentennial Park.
“I want to make sure the multi-purpose facility gets approved and moves forward,” Terrell said. “It was No. 1 on our resident survey, and that’s why it’s No. 1 on my list.”
Terrell said the facility would not only serve as a place for recreational activities, it would also be used as a senior center.
Terrell said other issues he wants to address include water service.
“We need to address the water lines to serve the long-term water needs of our city,” Terrell said. “We want to make sure that as we go through the drought, we have the water that we need. We’re at the point where we can’t put water in the storage tanks fast enough, and that puts us in a bind. But we have a new 30-inch water line that should help that.”
Mobility is another issue Terrell hopes to address, both with sidewalk improvements and with road construction projects. He said road work on FM 1709, FM 1938, Kimball Avenue and the DFW Connector Project is key to stay on top of.
“When we have our resident survey, we look at the gaps between how high the residents rank something and how far we are from accomplishing it,” Terrell said. “The widest gap right now is mobility. So taking care of mobility in Southlake is a high priority.”
In addition to the council, where Terrell has also served as mayor pro tem and deputy mayor pro tem, Terrell has also been a member of the planning and zoning commission, the zoning board of adjustment and a committee member for the Southlake 2025 Land Use and Comprehensive Plan.
His other community involvement includes being a graduate of Leadership Southlake, Carroll Leadership Academy for Supporting Success (CLASS) and the Southlake Citizens Academy. He has been an executive board member for the Carroll Education Foundation and president of Southlake Sister Cities.
He has also been a member of various civic and local organizations.
