Still Chasing a Championship: Boyd falls to Rowlett in 10-5A title game
By Andrew Snyder, asnyder@starlocalnews.com
With the district title on the line, the Rowlett baseball team condensed a night's worth of offense into a single inning to beat McKinney Boyd, 7-4, and move into sole possession of first place in District 10-5A with one game to play.
The Eagles (22-7, 11-2 in 10-5A) struck for seven runs in the top of the fourth on a six-hit rally that started with back-to-back singles and progressed to a bases-clearing double from Jerad Fowler and consecutive RBI triples from Conner Fikes and Jerad Wilson.
Brett Byrum picked up the win on the mound for Rowlett.
The Broncos carried a 1-0 lead into the fourth after striking for a run in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch, but they could only keep an opportunistic Eagles lineup in check for so long. Williams had already managed to work his way out of a jam in the second after giving up back-to-back singles and hitting a batter to load the bases with two outs. With the Eagles threatening, he forced Fowler to ground weakly to the left of the mound and made the throw, beating the runner to first.
Fowler would win the battle next time though, to help chase Williams from the game. He was replaced by reliever Tyler Keegan, who got the final two outs and stayed on the mound for two more scoreless innings.
“Keegan came into a tight situation and he threw three zeros up,” Milam said. “We can't ask Tyler to do any better than that.”
The Broncos took back a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a 2-run home run from Will Hollis that scored first baseman Francisco De Jesus, who singled on to account for one of Boyd's five total hits.
Boyd would pick up another run in the sixth when Hollis drew a walk to land on base before scoring on an RBI triple from Thommy Nawa that cut the Eagles' lead to 7-4. The Broncos wouldn't come any closer though, as Rowlett brought in Colton Kalmus to close the game with a perfect seventh inning.
“If there was anything good that came out of this loss, it was that it had a playoff-type atmosphere,” Milam said. “Our kids haven't really had that all year. Tonight was a playoff-type atmosphere. It was for a title, so our kids did a great job in handling the pressure that was there. That's a plus. That's the one good thing we got out of tonight, even though it was a loss.”
The loss dropped Boyd (21-7, 10-3 in 10-5A) into second place in district heading into the final game of the regular season. The Broncos have already clinched a playoff spot, but they will look to pick up one more win when they face South Garland, who they beat 16-2 in the first round, on the road at 4 p.m. Friday.
“I was very proud of our kids,” Milam said. “I know we wanted to win a title, but now we're looking forward to the playoffs and going more than three rounds deep.”
