Rowlett bests Boyd to split district series

Published: Wednesday, January 18, 2012 2:35 PM CST
ROWLETT—After being drubbed by McKinney Boyd a month ago to open the district season, Rowlett edged the Lady Broncos, 46-43, Tuesday night to start the second round of district play on a winning note and remain tied with Garland Lakeview Centennial for fourth place in the 10-5A standings.

“I think the effort was there tonight,” said Bretagne Galbreath, Boyd head coach. “I was proud of how hard they played. We're just trying to get that consistency out of them right now and to build some chemistry.”

It was a down-to-the-wire affair.

The Lady Eagles were up by one, 44-43, with less than a minute to go, looking to burn clock and force Boyd (10-17, 3-5 in District 10-5A) to foul for possession. Unfortunately for the Lady Broncos, they had been playing a clean game and had four fouls to give.

It looked like the game would play out with the clock draining to nothing as Boyd went for the intentional whistle and Rowlett continued to keep the ball, but the Lady Broncos caught a break when junior Micaela Gonzalez stole the Lady Eagles' third consecutive inbound.

“Just her example alone was huge,” Galbreath said. “I'm really proud of her.”

But with a chance to take the lead, Boyd turned the ball over to all but end the game.

Rowlett had trailed, 35-34, heading into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Eagles jumped in front after consecutive scoring drives from guard Courtney Fine gave them a lead they would safeguard the rest of the way.

Dominique Oliver paced the Lady Eagles' effort with 18 points, while Fine contributed 14. Lydia Williams scored four points, Harlie Greer and Janee Pennington each came up with three, and Taylee Alexander and Kyna Boyd each scored two to finalize team scoring around the same figure Rowlett had in its first game against Boyd.

The biggest difference between the two meetings was the Lady Broncos' offensive production. After beating the Lady Eagles, 63-43, in the first contest, Boyd saw its scoring numbers take a dive the second time around.

Tuesday's loss was only the most recent example of Boyd's extended offensive slump. In their last five district contests, the Lady Broncos have averaged 37.2 points per game as they struggle to rebound from the loss of injured starting point guard Seanna Arredondo, who is out the rest of the season.

Boyd was also without junior Rochelle Vasquez, one of their typical top scorers, against Rowlett. Galbreath wouldn't comment on her absence.

“I think right now, it's like we have somewhat of a brand new ball club out there,” Galbreath said, “with kids returning from injury and a couple of young ones up.”

A rise in turnovers is in part responsible for the Lady Broncos' drop in production, as they struggled to move the ball against the Lady Eagles, turning the ball over 11 times in the third quarter alone. Boyd still managed to outscore Rowlett that frame, 14-9, but the abundance of turnovers prevented a more drastic run and allowed the Lady Eagles to set the stage for their late comeback.

Among the bright spots for the Lady Broncos was a return to form for sophomore forward Haley Carruthers, who only recently returned from injury. Carruthers, a new team captain alongside Gonzalez, scored 18 points to replicate the 20-point performance she gave in her last game against Rowlett.

“She needed that,” Galbreath said, “to break out of the slump she's been in since coming off injury.”

Boyd junior post Julia Hendrieth, another player recently returned from injury, also had a quality game, scoring 13 points.

“We've gotten stronger inside, we just need to work on getting them the ball,” Galbreath said.

The Lady Eagles return to action Friday when they travel to Garland Lakeview Centennial for a 6 p.m. tipoff. Rowlett lost to the Lady Patriots, 52-42, in the teams' first meeting.

The Lady Broncos will look to reintroduce themselves into the playoff race Friday when they host South Garland at 6 p.m. Boyd lost to the Lady Colonels, 44-40, during the first round of district play.
