Injuries cost Boyd in district loss

McKinney Boyd (2-3 in District 10-5A) may have hosted Friday's district contest against Garland Naaman Forest, but the Lady Rangers painted the gym green with their dominant inside game in a 53-32 win.
Morgan Holly paced the Lady Rangers' (4-1) effort with 24 points and 11 boards and combined with 6-foot-2 Micayla Buckner, who had 13 rebounds, to control the boards.
Naaman had 52 rebounds on the night, which did wonders for an offense that often failed to hit its first shot.
“That's something that we prepared for with this team,” said Bretagne Galbreath, Boyd head coach. “We worked on boxing out and went to a zone, so I thought we could have stopped the inside game a little more effectively. We just didn't come out and execute in that.
“We didn't box out, show that heart and get that area of the game taken care of tonight.”
The Lady Rangers were able to establish a comfortable lead by winning the scoring battle, 15-5, in the first quarter, and they opened the second half on a 14-0 run to quash any thought of a Boyd comeback. The Lady Broncos were held to six points that frame.
Naaman entered the fourth up 43-22, a lead it would safeguard down the stretch.
Unable to establish a presence inside, Boyd had to settle for lower-percentage looks and ended up shooting just .220 from the floor. Rochelle Vasquez led the team with 15 points.
Often the Lady Broncos’ most successful offensive strategy was to have Vasquez charge in, pick up a foul and head to the free throw line, where the team scored 11 of its points.
Vasquez was the Lady Broncos’ only scoring option at times, as she scored all of the team’s points in the first and third quarters.
“We didn't have enough production out of some of the players that we needed to,” Galbreath said. “Consistency from those players is up-and-down every game, so that kind of hurt us tonight as well.”
Friday's district loss was the second in a week for the Lady Broncos, who also dropped a home game Tuesday against Garland, 55-40. Boyd got off to a slow start in that game as well, trailing 14-5 after the first quarter before being outscored in each subsequent frame.
Boyd has suffered from a series of injuries this season and the trend shows no sign of stopping. Just when the Lady Broncos returned Charmaine Celestine, they lost Seanna Arredondo and Haley Carruthers.
Arredondo will be out for the rest of the season.
“We've lost two more starters,” Galbreath said. “I don't care who you are: it hurts when three of your best players are sitting on the bench. That's kind of where we're at.”
Those injuries have forced the Lady Broncos to rely on younger players like freshman Jordan Brightwell, who had three points, two rebounds and an assist against Naaman.
Friday's lost dropped Boyd into a four-way tie for fourth place in the district standings with Garland Lakeview Centennial, Rowlett and South Garland. The Lady Broncos return to play Tuesday when they travel to winless North Garland for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
“We're still in the thick of things,” Galbreath said.
“It's not fun to lose. I don't like it. [My players] don't like it. It's just something that we'll continue to push through. It's been a tough year with the injuries. We're doing what we can.”
