Broncos score 30 in third, rout Lakeview Centennial

McKinney Boyd (3-1) running back Bryan Driskell rushed for 276 yards on 25 carries and scored four touchdowns in the third quarter, five total, to power a 58-14 Broncos victory in their District 10-5A opener against winless Garland Lakeview Centennial.
Boyd led, 21-7, at halftime before racking up 30 points in the third on 32-, 47- and 58-yard touchdown runs from Driskell, a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Curtis Ladd to Driskell and a 42-yard field goal from kicker Jared Symmank.
“I told the kids that every week I expect a tough ball game,” said Don Drake, Boyd head coach. “I thought Lakeview played a great first half of football. I thought it went about as well as they would have wanted it to go. You got to get the score close and hope you can keep battling. We were fortunate that we were able to get some turnovers in the second half that helped us in the third quarter when we were able to capitalize and put a lead out there.
Driskell’s scoring against the Patriots brought his season total to 15 touchdowns. Friday's win was his second five-touchdown game this season, as he also hit that count in the opener against McKinney North.
Ladd completed 13-of-20 passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns and wide receiver Cameron Decell had two catches for 87 yards and a touchdown in the win to highlight an improved Broncos passing attack that complemented its continuously-strong ground game. It also kept Driskell from reaching a high number of carries a week after he had 40 in a win over McKinney.
“I thought Curtis did a great job,” Drake said. “Week after week what you want to see is progress from everybody but especially those guys in that it's their first (district) game experience this year in varsity. You want to see that growth and I think Curtis, from the moment that he stepped on the field for us as a quarterback against McKinney North in Week Zero until now, he's made huge strides in his progress and we've got to continue to do that.”
The Broncos third quarter outpouring of scoring, along with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Ladd to Colby Vinson in the fourth, ensured that the returning 10-5A champions won by a comfortable margin against a team likely to fall to the bottom of the district standings.
“I thought that third quarter was pretty explosive for us, obviously,” Drake said. “I didn't think that we played with a real high intensity level there in the second quarter, particularly. We jumped out to a two-score lead to start the game and I thought we let our intensity level drop.
“I challenged the kids at half time that they had to come out and play with a lot better intensity in the second half and I thought we really did that in the third quarter and separated ourselves.”
That didn't look the case minutes after halftime when the Patriots pulled within a touchdown, 21-14, of Boyd on a 10-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Denton Edwards and receiver Jarvis Baxter that capped a drive in which Baxter had four catches for 63 yards. The first came in between a pair of Broncos defenders, and Lakeview had its most success offensively when it just tossed the ball up and hoped Baxter came away with it.
The Patriot's only other touchdown came on a 26-yard touchdown reception by Baxter in the second quarter, and the receiver ended the night with seven catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
Boyd started the game by quickly building a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run from Driskell and 23-yard touchdown reception by Decell. The Broncos offense was complemented by a defense that didn't allow Lakeview to get more than three plays into its opening two offensive drives.
The Broncos were set to return a punt after the Patriots opened the second quarter with what should have been another three-and-out, but a roughing the kicker call against Boyd gave them their only first down up to that point.
Lakeview scored five plays later.
Penalties were costly for the Broncos throughout the game and they ended up with 11 for a loss of 90 yards.
“There's penalties that you address and there's penalties that I think you've got to be careful about, because you don't want to take away the intensity level of the kid,” Drake said. “Roughing the punter is obviously something we've got to talk about. A kid is going hard, but he's got to be sensible right there too.”
The momentum swing continued as the Broncos lost a fumble on their next possession, and they would trade failed drives with the Patriots before catching a lucky break right before the half when, after another offensive stall, Lakeview snapped the ball over its punter’s head and Boyd recovered it 10 yards from the goal.
One play was all it took for the Broncos to make it the rest of the way, as Ladd connected with tight end Dylan Dickman for a touchdown that padded his team's lead a little more heading into half time.
Fortunately for the Broncos, they were able to turn the game into a blowout with five scores within just over a six-minute span in the third. A close win against Lakeview would have been bad news for the returning 10-5A champions, as the Patriots won't be one of the teams threatening a repeat title run. That was clear from the start of the season when Lakeview lost 56-0 to Plano.
A one or two-touchdown win by Boyd would have given the district's more competitive teams some extra confidence when it came their time to face the Broncos. Particularly Garland, who they will play next week.
The Owls were the only district team to beat Boyd in 2010.
“That's a huge game, no doubt about it,” Drake said. “The Owls are a very good football program. They've played some very strong opponents early in the season and stood up very well, so I know they've got a very quality football team. It's a big game for us, there's no doubt. They beat us last year 21-14 at their place and that was our only loss in district play. We know how tough they are, we know they're going to come ready and we've got to have a great week of practice and preparation for them.”
