Track and field: Carroll, Coppell claim District 7-5A titles; Smith wins Boys 9-4A crown

Spots at the 2012 UIL Class 4A and 5A regional meet were on the line last week when local track and field clubs competed at their respective district meets with many squads finding success.
In addition to having individuals earn spots at regionals, multiple programs won their district meets outright.
Leading the charge were Coppell and Southlake Carroll, which dominated the District 7-5A Championships.
Carrollton Newman Smith's boys (137) also claimed the title in District 9-4A, while Creekview (133) took silver in girls action behind Frisco Heritage (159) and The Colony's boys (122) won bronze behind Denton Ryan (154) and Lake Dallas (130).
Smith won gold on the strength of its relay teams, among others, as the Trojans grabbed gold in the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays. The Lady Trojans also placed first in the 1,600 relay.
Carroll and Coppell performed well in the relay events as well, with the Dragons claiming first in the 400 and 1,600 relays. The Cowboys grabbed gold in the 800 relay, while the Cowgirls crossed the line first in the 1,600.
Individually, gold medals were secured on the boys side by Smith's Shawn Holmes in the long jump (21 feet, 10 inches), Creekview's Matt Wilcocks in the pole vault (13-6), Smith's Derrick Johnson in the 100 (10.52), Creekview's Jamar Taylor in the 200 (22.51), Smith's Eric Williams in the 400 (50.22), Smith's Jeffrey Moore in the 800 (2:00.97), Coppell's Clay Ross in the triple jump (44-04.5), Carroll's Ryan Weigel in the 100 (10.93), Carroll's Brandon Sanders in the 200 (21.94), Carroll's Trevor Gilley in the 1,600 (4:12.10), Carroll's Joe Sansone in the 3,200 (9:12.15), Coppell's Derek Udoh in the 110 (14.90) and 300 hurdles (38.26); The Colony's Benjamin Bibby in the discus (157-03), The Colony's Gerald Thomas in the 400 (49.70) and The Colony's Justin Mitchell in the 800 (2:04.01).
In girls action, gold medals were procured by Creekview's Kasie Trigg in the high jump (5-4), Creekview's Ngozi Nweke in the discus (129-8), Smith's Courtney Okolo in the 200 (24.65) and 400 (54.73); Creekview's Melissa Gonzalez in the 100 (14.23) and 300 hurdles (45.66); Coppell's Cassidy Pickrell in the high jump (5-6), Carroll's Kami Mickens in the 400 (56.60), Coppell's Sarah Agnew in the 800 (2:21.55), Carroll's Courtney Krieghauser in the 1,600 (5:00.02), Carroll's Felice Johnson in the 3,200 (10:58.68), The Colony's Elizabeth Tubbs in the 800 (2:28.49), The Colony's Lisa Richins in the 1,600 (5:37.33) and The Colony's Adela Silva in the 3,200 (12:21.95).
