Top 10 The Colony Sports Stories of 2011: 5. Girls soccer team cruises in first round

The Colony's girls soccer team has had a solid season in 2011. The Lady Cougars overcame a bevy of injuries to reach the playoffs out of District 4-4A and cruised to a 6-0 win Friday in its bi-district round contest against Paris North Lamar.
Tuesday, however, The Colony's season came to a close with a 2-0 loss against Frisco Wakeland, which entered the playoffs as the District 9-4A champions and dropped just four matches all season.
"We got beat by a better team," said David Hilliard, The Colony coach. "They got a goal early in the second half and we had our chances to tie, we just couldn't push one across. They're a good team. They're experienced with nine seniors that are college bound and are very disciplined. They're organized and do a good job on the attack."
Hilliard also credited goalie Taylor Erwin for keeping the Lady Cougars in the match.
"She was fantastic," he said. "She was probably the star of the game on either side. She made all kinds of saves. She's just a sophomore, so I think this postseason experience is something she can build on."
With the season now complete, The Colony can begin to focus on next season, when it should return nine starters.
"We had some tough injuries that if we didn't have, I think we would still be playing right now," Hilliard said. "But it was a great season and the kids really stepped up and played well. I'm proud of the effort they gave and the way they prepared for every match. Next season, with another year of development, we're going to be real confident."
