Top 10 The Colony Sports Stories of 2011: 7. Softball team snaps 25-year playoff drought

For the first time in 25 seasons, The Colony's softball team will be competing in the postseason.
Following an April 8 win against Lake Dallas, the Lady Cougars know they will be entering the playoffs as either a No. 3 or No. 4 seed out of District 4-4A with Denton Ryan (11-0) and Wichita Falls Rider (8-2) having already secured the top two seeds, respectively.
While the Lady Cougars have received solid pitching throughout the season from Tori Rendon and Alyssa Ledesma, it's been The Colony's bats that have fueled the success. The Lady Cougars have set program records in district in runs scored (73) and stolen bases (51), and have six everyday players that are batting more than .400 (Amberlee Partridge, Shelbi Featherston, Brooklin Olsen, Sarah Wiseman, Tori Hawk and Jocelyn Ward). Freshman Rachel Morgan, meanwhile, has tallied two doubles and a triple in four pinch-hit appearances.
The Lady Cougars know they will be headed to the playoffs but will be looking to use today's finale against Denton as an opportunity to gain steam as The Colony has dropped each of its past two contests against the district's elite, including a 10-0 loss Monday against Rider. The contest was originally slated for Friday but had to be postponed because of brush fires in the Wichita Falls area.
"It was something I've never seen before," Coleman said. "The junior varsity game was in the first inning and they started evacuating the neighborhood behind the field. They saw us and told us we had to leave, too. So we drove home and then went back out there Monday."
Coleman added the 10-0 margin was a little deceiving.
"They're a very good team," she said, "but the game was closer than 10-0. It was one or two runs in the first couple of innings and then 3-0 in the fifth. Their pitcher did a great job of slowing us down and they got a big play with the bases loaded when we made an error to break the game open. Other than that, it was a close game."
Coleman added the Lady Cougars squandered a few scoring opportunities with mistakes on the bases.
"Tori hit the ball well and Courtney Bearden did a great job of getting some bunts down and moving the runners around. We just couldn't get them in."
Rendon started in the circle before giving way to Ledesma in the second inning.
"We pitched well and made no errors until the sixth," Coleman said.
