Top 10 The Colony Sports Stories of 2011: 9. Youthful volleyball team qualifies for playoffs

Published: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 6:13 PM CST
The Colony's volleyball team entered the postseason with three of its previous five matches going the full five-set distance, including a win in a postseason tune-up Friday against DeSoto.

Unfortunately for the Lady Cougars, the high-pressure experience failed to play off as The Colony was eliminated Tuesday in the bi-district round of the playoffs by Frenship (20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 15-11).

"It was a very tight match," said Terri Harrod, The Colony coach, "but their persistence kind of wore us down. They have a very good middle player that we weren't able to contain defensively as the match went on and we just made too many mistakes down the stretch."

The Colony rallied from behind to take the first set and played well in the third before the momentum began to shift Frenship's direction.

"Frenship is a very good defensive team," Harrod said. "They kept a lot of balls alive and I think it was deflating to us. The girls were frustrated because we weren't putting the first ball down and were getting in some longer points and as a result, we quit on our transition ball."

The Colony went from 16 kills in the first and second sets to just four in the decisive fifth game.

Harrod added she was pleased with the play of the underclassmen but that the seniors didn't play their best.

"That leadership just wasn't quite there," she said. "Madison Gill and Shannon Ranney played outstanding and Jennifer Valenciano and Sylvie Morrow kept pounding the ball. But our seniors kind of struggled and with it tough to score, it got away from us at the end."

Still, it was a solid season for a Lady Cougar squad that rallied to finish second in district despite dropping five matches.

"This is the first team I've had that has made the playoffs with that many losses in district," Harrod said. "It's really a credit to how hard they worked to get back there. This whole season has been a real learning process but they continued to make progress and work hard to get back to the postseason."
