Top 10 The Colony Sports Stories of 2011: 10. Baseball team advances to postseason

Published: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 6:13 PM CST
The Colony's baseball team entered the UIL Class 4A playoffs with a loads of momentum having won six of its final seven District 4-4A contests to finish as the No. 2 seed.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, the playoff run ended before it ever got rolling, as The Colony was swept by Canyon Randall in a bi-district round series Friday at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.

Randall pulled away late to take Game 1, 18-5, and the Cougars could never recover, falling later that day in Game 2, 9-0.

"We played as poorly as we have in three or four years," said Martin Dean, The Colony coach. "We had a tough time throwing strikes and made a lot of mistakes in the field. [Randall] had some good pitching, but we didn't swing the bats very well, either."

Dean said the Cougars began to show signs of coming to life late in the first game, erasing an early deficit to trail, 7-5. However, Randall closed the game with an 11-run seventh inning to take the game and any momentum the Cougars may have built. The squad was never able to recover in the second game.

"It was tough to have to come right back out and play the second game after that inning," Dean said. "We just never got it going again."

Jordan Foley started the first game for The Colony, allowing six runs. Dean said he only surrendered three "hard-hit balls" but uncharacteristically walked six batters, including a five-run inning with four walks after the Cougars had gained an early 2-0 lead.

"He settled in a little but we had to take him out because his pitch count got too high," Dean said, "and it all just kind of unraveled after that."

The Cougars scratched out their first two runs on an RBI double from Hudson Bird to plate Parker Jones followed by an RBI single from Matt Dean. In the fifth, Luke Waddell drove in a pair with a single to cut the deficit to 7-5.

In the nightcap, Corey Patterson and Dean were the lone Cougars with hits.

Hudson Bird started on the mound before giving way to Ken Wallentine in relief.

"Hudson did an OK job the walks just kind of hurt him a little bit, too," Dean said. "The first game was a good game. It was close and pretty exciting until the last inning. The second game, we just never had it. They came right out and scored four in the first and we weren't able to battle."
