Wrestling: Flower Mound wins Santa Slam

Published: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 7:26 PM CST
Many of the area's top wrestling programs were in action Friday and Saturday as squads headed to Coppell to compete in the annual Santa Slam Tournament.

The action got underway Friday with the duals portion before participants competed in an individual tournament Saturday.

Many of the top teams were local squads, including Flower Mound in first place, Coppell in second and Lewisville in fifth. Marcus also competed and had a pair of individuals with strong performances.

In Friday's duals, Coppell notched wins against Highland Park and Paschal, while the Cowgirls notched victories over Dallas Skyline, Arlington Sam Houston and Paschal.

More than 38 programs competed in the tournament Saturday but none could keep pace with the Jaguars or Cowboys.

Flower Mound was led by mutliple first-place performances, including Dylan Akers in the 120-pound division, Scott Akers (138), Brady Speckels (152) and Tyler Scalzie (195). Rounding out the top performers for the Jaguars were Marc Oelkers in second (113), Drake Dudley in second (160), Jordan Speckels in third (106) and Hunter Jeffus in third (126).

"It was a good meet for us," said Steve Davis, Flower Mound coach. "The Santa Slam is always a pretty good preview of what the competition at the Region II Tournament will look like. We had our normal cast of characters, and everyone performed about how we would have expected.

"Our only concern is how some of our newer guys continue to step up because we have more very talented tournaments coming up here shortly."

One unexpected result came at 113-pounds, where Oelkers made a run to finish second. Scalzie also took gold despite being a new face on varsity.

"Scalzie has some incredibly unorthodoxed techniques," Davis said. "But it's working."

Flower Mound continues with a tournament today and Thursday in Allen before competing in an event on the campus of Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) Dec. 29-30. The event will feature 48 programs from 10 different states.

"Our young guys have shown some great flashes," Davis said. "But these tournaments will be a great chance for them to continue to mature."

While Flower Mound took first, the Cowboys weren't far behind in second.

Leading the Cowboys as individual champions were Kaleb Richardson (126), Daniel Murillo (132) and Sam Rice (heavyweight). Roberto Montealegre (120), meanwhile, placed second, while Dillon Stoffregen (195) and Jared McComb (182) hauled in bronze-medal performances.

"I'm very proud of how well our wrestlers competed this week," said Chip Lowery, Coppell coach. "We look forward to keeping this momentum going."

Coppell continues Jan. 6-7 at the Centex Tournament in Austin.

Lewisville, meanwhile, had six wrestlers place for the second consecutive tournament.

Erick Planco claimed second (132), as did Rodrick Williams (220), while Hung Hoang (113), Eddie Martin (138) and Clay Lewis (145) took third and Minh Hoang finished fourth (106).

"I was a little disappointed we didn't have anyone in first," said Kent Hall, Lewisville coach. "But we finished about where I thought we should have."

Marcus' squad also met its expectations with Jon Murphy (170) and Brandon Woodbury (182) taking first. Both Murphy and Woodbury are unbeaten on the season.

"We were a little short-handed," said Mike Prado, Marcus coach. "We don't have our full lineup yet. But we had some nice surprises, and we also had one or two guys that I thought would do a little better.

"We've been wrestling pretty well, so far, and have been able to pull out some close matches."

Marcus and Lewisville continue Jan. 6-7 at the Arlington Lamar Invitational.

The Colony had its share of medalists as well.

John Arra (113) took gold for the Cougars, while Colt Stowe (126) claimed silver and Jake Thornhill (132) finished fourth.

The Lady Farmers and Cowgirls were also represented in girls action, with the Cowgirls winning the championship. Avery Souders, Stephanie Martinez and Cara Romieke finished second for the Cowgirls. From Lewisville, Brittany Marshall won her first varsity tournament, while Beatriz Sanchez and Yessica Martinez each placed second.
