Football: Lobos win Battle of 423

LITTLE ELM -- It was a first-quarter play that set the tone for Friday night's District 4-4A matchup between The Colony and Little Elm. With the Cougars leading 10-7 and the Lobos backed up to their own 16, running back Matt Marrs' 53-yard bolt up the middle was a harbinger of things to come.
Those 53 yards were the first of 172 for Marrs, who also scored a touchdown to lead Little Elm to a 31-17 victory over their rivals from The Colony.
Little Elm's defense also was a big factor on Friday night, sacking Cougar quarterback Garrett Simpson eight times and forcing five turnovers, including two interceptions by Rashawn Wainwright.
For The Colony, most everything good happened in the first quarter, aside from the big run by Marrs. Cougar wideout Gerald Thomas, who finished with five catches for 143 yards, pulled in a 61-yard touchdown from Garrett Simpson, and Nate Fox drilled a 39-yard field goal to give the Cougars the early lead. But that was about it for The Colony's offense.
Little Elm (5-1, 2-0) looks to remain unbeaten in 4-4A when it travels to Denton High next week. If they can maintain the pace, Little Elm's regular-season finale vs. Denton Ryan could be huge.
The Colony (3-3, 1-1) hopes to get back on track at home against Lake Dallas. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Oct. 7.
