Titans shut out Cougars
By BLAINE CRIMMINS, bcrimmins@acnpapers.com
FRISCO -- Frisco Centennial continued its strong start to the season with a 21-0 shutout of The Colony on Friday night at Pizza Hut Park. Not only are the Titans now 3-0, they've surrendered a mere 13 points the entire year.
After a week in which The Colony scored 53 points against McKinny High, Centennial head coach Mark Howard was counting on his defense to slow down the Cougars.
"We knew it was going to be (our) defense against their offense," Howard said.
Cougar quarterback Garrett Simpson was being chased all night, facing intense pressure at the line and finding little options available in the secondary. The Colony's backfield, which looked dangerous against McKinney, combined for -20 yards.
It's a good thing, too, because the Titans weren't exactly tearing it up on the other side of the ball. A few big plays helped put points on the board but this was a game that featured 17 combined punts.
"I'm disappointed we didn't score more in the second half but I'm proud of our first half offensively," Howard said.
At the end of the day, a win is a win. Howard was satisfied with his team's focus and work ethic in getting the job done.
"Across the board, special teams, defense, offense ... they played with an inspired effort tonight," he said.
The Colony head coach Rudy Rangel's assessment of Friday's result was an honest one.
"They stoned us. I don't know how else to word it," Rangel said. "We've got to look at film and find out what we've got to do better."
Of particular concern is the letdown from last week's game.
"Something we've got to get over is having a really good game, and then the next week was just don't," Rangel said. "(But) I'm going to challenge the boys. We're going to get up tomorrow and get back to work, and get ready for North Dallas and then district."
Titan running back Darion McMahon lead Centennial's offense, scoring two touchdowns and racking up 153 total yards. The play of the game was McMahon's 78-yard touchdown gallop in the first quarter on a well-executed screen pass toward the left sideline.
Quarterback Lamar Jordan was rarely pressured, throwing for 261 yards and a touchdown. He had time to pick the defense apart throughout much of the game, connecting with eight different receivers.
For The Colony, Simpson had a decent first half, both on the ground and in the air. Unfortunately for The Colony, it was all downhill after that. Simpson finished the game with 233 yards of total offense.
The Cougars' best scoring opportunity all night came near the end of the second quarter when they had first-and-goal with a little more than 1 minute remaining. But the drive was killed by a clipping penalty and three incomplete passes, setting up a blocked 37-yard field goal.
The Cougars (1-2) will look to get back on track next Friday, Sept. 16, when they host North Dallas during homecoming weekend in The Colony. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tommy Briggs Cougar Stadium.
Centennial will be working to remain unbeaten as they face Carrollton R.L. Turner at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium.
