Football: The Colony pulls away from McKinney
By BLAINE CRIMMINS, bcrimmins@acnpapers.com
It's hard to imagine defense was much of a factor in a game that featured 87 combined points. But after giving up 27 in the first half, The Colony (1-1) held McKinney High (0-2) to only six points thereafter en route to a 54-33 win at Tommy Briggs Cougar Stadium on Friday night.
A frenetic, back-and-forth first half featured two teams seemingly on par with one another in terms of both talent and discipline. The Colony's defense, however, proved to be the difference in the second half.
McKinney quarterback Robert Somborn played admirably, throwing for 410 yards and three touchdowns. But as the game wore on, he was under more and more pressure. Somborn was sacked five times, fumbled twice, and threw a key interception to The Colony's Royce Richichi in the third quarter.
"To be honest, (Johnson) didn't put any adjustments on the board (at halftime)," Rangel said. "He just challenged them and told them they're better than how they're playing and that he believed in them. They came out and did it."
On the other side of the ball, The Colony was lead by quarterback Garrett Simpson, who ran for three touchdowns and passed for two. Standout Gerald Thomas was on the receiving end of both throws, one of which went 86 yards over the middle. Thomas also scored a rushing touchdown.
Cougar running back Bryan Hammond ran for 129 yards (116 in the second half) while Mike Reeves totaled 91 yards on the ground. Each had a touchdown to help put the game out of reach.
Though The Colony's defense played well, they never had an answer for McKinney's Jonathon Shannon, who caught 9 passes for 110 yards and scored three touchdowns. Quentin Casner also caught 9 passes, totaling 127 yards.
McKinney got off to a great start with Marcus Garrett returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Also of note, teammate Conner Fuentes pulled in 131 yards in the air and scored McKinney's last touchdown.
As evidenced by the stats, McKinney has a potent offense, and rightly enjoyed a 27-21 lead at the half. But The Colony's running game slowed the tempo in the second half, and McKinney wasn't able to get back on track.
"We came out at halftime and decided we were just going to get it done. The kids showed a lot of character and heart," Rangel said. "We have a long ways to go. We made a ton of mistakes early but we know we've got a starting point and we know exactly what we have to do to get better."
Adding to the chaotic nature of the first half was a malfunctioning scoreboard during most of the second quarter, requiring game officials to keep time on the field. The problem was resolved at halftime.
The Cougars hope to start a winning streak next Friday when they travel to Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. start against Frisco Centennial. The Lions, meanwhile, will be looking for their first win of 2011 when they face cross-town rival McKinney Boyd at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9.
