Football: Cougars compete but fall to Sherman

As season-openers go, Saturday night's game at the Cotton Bowl served its purpose. Win or lose, The Colony High School learned a lot about its team.
Facing a formidable foe from Sherman, the Cougars remained competitive throughout the game but came up short, 28-20. Head coach Rudy Rangel said he was impressed with his team's character.
"Our kids competed. We came out and established ourselves and had chances to win the game," Rangel said. "We're a competitive, high-character team."
The Cougars also struggled on special teams, including a missed a field goal late in the game. Rangel said the team will be focusing on these areas in particular in preparation for next week.
On the plus side, Rangel said he was pleased with the team's offensive game plan.
"I feel like we found our identity offensively. I feel good about what we did in the second half," Rangel said. "We lined it up and ran it."
Down 21-14 late in the second half, The Colony capped off a long drive spanning two quarters with a touchdown pass from Garrett Simpson to Gerald Thomas with plenty of time to spare and a chance to tie the game.
But Sherman blocked the extra-point attempt. The Cougars had a chance to take the lead with a little over 2 minutes left but missed a 26-yard field goal attempt. Sherman responded with a touchdown run to seal the win.
Up next, the Cougars (0-1) face McKinney High at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at Tommy Briggs Stadium in The Colony.
