Track and field: The Colony's Robinson wins in Keller

Published: Wednesday, July 6, 2011 6:20 PM CDT
Kimberly Robinson, a 16-year-old from The Colony, recently won gold in the heptathlon at the AAU District 15 Track and Field National Qualifier Meet at Keller High School. Robinson won the event with 3,245 points to defeat the second-place finisher by nearly 500 points.

Competing for the first time in a heptathlon, Robinson began the two-day challenge facing not only seven events but also recovering from a 104-degree fever the night before.

"She was very ill for two days, the worst being the night before the heptathlon," said Tim Robinson, Kimberly's father and pastor of Church That Simple of The Colony. "Her mother and I debated whether to take her to the emergency room Thursday night. We prayed and on the morning of the meet, her fever broke. I believe prayer can change things and it certainly did in her case. It was amazing to see Kimberly compete Friday after being so depleted of energy and strength the night before."

Robinson's first event was the 100-meter hurdles, an event which she had only previously competed in once. That made no difference, however, as she cruised to first in the event.

Next up for Robinson was the high jump, where she finished second, before taking first in the shot put and second in the 200.

The event continued on the second day, with Robinson taking first in both the long jump and javelin, before closing the heptathlon by earning second in the 800 to win the overall event.

Robinson will also compete in the upcoming AAU National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in New Orleans.

Robinson is coached by Bianca LeBlanc of the The Colony Express. The TC Express track team will be participating in the TAAF Region IV District Meet July 15-16 at Marcus High School. The top four finishers of regionals qualify to compete at the TAAF State Championship Meet July 28-31 at Baylor in Waco.
