Despite strong winds and a high pollen count, over 100 players came out to participate in the Little Elm Fire Department Auxiliary fourth annual Golf Tournament last Friday. At a preliminary count, the organization raised over $5,000 from the event.
Participants enjoyed a round of golf at the 18-hole Frisco Lakes Golf Course, a dinner buffet of barbecue and cheesecake, and the chance to win trophies and raffle items. Before the shotgun start, the LEFDA held a Golf Ball Drop Contest, which labeled golf balls were dropped from a fire ladder truck above a target hole. Ed Krajca was the winner of an iPad II in the contest.
"It was the first time I ever won anything," Krajca said.
After dinner, awards were given out by LEFDA President Michael Gaffney for a number of categories. Longest Drive was given to Mike Tackett. Closest to the Pin was awarded to Sean Kinney.
With a score of 53, team "Schmitty's" was awarded first place. Sporting blue Hawaiian shirts, the team consisted of Steven Leary, Greg Vencevich and Wayne Austin.
"We were shocked," Leary said. "We didn't think we were going to win."
Second place trophies were awarded to Scott Dunn and David Boettner for a score of 55. Hunter Smith, Aaron Mallory, Eric Medders and Tim Eastelring nabbed third place with a score of 55.
Trophies featuring a donkey were given out for last place as well, which went to team "Having Fun," which consisted of Sean Kinney, Rob Bettencourt, Matt Taylor and Fire Marshal Brian Roach.
As a special bonus award this year, EMS Division Chief Todd Jamison and Charlie Walker won Best Dressed for their blue and yellow classic golf outfits, winning them a $50 gift certificate to the Lion's Den. Jamison said they got the idea while registering for the tournament.
