Police tie nail salon burglar to other crimes
By Bill Conrad, bconrad@acnpapers.com
The man arrested last week for breaking into a Plano building has been tied to other burglaries in Plano and at least one surrounding city.
William Earl Stevens, a 42-year-old Wylie resident, was arrested after police caught him breaking into a nail salon in the 8400 block of Preston Road about 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 15.
Officer David Tilley of the Plano Police Department said since his arrest, Stevens has been linked to several other burglaries in the city, although the total number has yet to be determined. Tilley said there were at least five salons broken into in the city immediately prior to Stevens' arrest.
This is not the first time Stevens has been in trouble with the law in Plano. In June 2010, Plano PD arrested Stevens for burglary of a motor vehicle, a class A misdemeanor. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 210 days in jail.
After Stevens was arrested last week, detectives from Garland spoke with him and Stevens admitted his involvement in several burglaries in that city, said Garland PD officer Joe Harn.
"I think he cleared eight break-ins for us and we are going to be filing three charges of burglary of a building," Harn said. "He was hitting all different types of businesses including a few restaurants. There was one strip shopping center where he broke into nearly every building."
Harn said the burglaries occurred in a several week period spanning late January and early February.
Stevens has been charged with one count of burglary of a building and is being held in the Collin County Jail on $5,000 bond. Any charges stemming from the Garland burglaries will be filed in Dallas County, Harn said.
