Lincoln no match for Raccoons
BY CHRIS O'DELL, codell@acnpapers.com
MESQUITE -- Frisco didn't get off to the start it wanted in Saturday's second-round playoff matchup against Dallas Lincoln.
The Raccoons surrendered an opening-drive touchdown via a 52-yard pass from quarterback Erick Neal to receiver Brenson Davis, putting Frisco in an early 6-0 hole.
However, the Raccoons weren't rattled one bit from the Lincoln score, dominating the final two quarters en route to a 56-20 victory at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
It didn't take long for Frisco to answer Lincoln's opening-drive touchdown. Receiver Dee Fields pulled down a 10-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Eric Allen to put the Raccoons ahead, 7-6, at the 4:46 mark of the opening quarter.
Neal then threw his second touchdown pass of the game to open the second frame, with this one coming on a 29-yard catch from receiver Rodney Allen.
A successful 2-point conversion would give Lincoln a 14-7 advantage with 11:40 remaining in the opening half.
That's when the Raccoons buckled down on both sides of the ball, dominating the remainder of the game and eventually leaving no doubt about the game's outcome.
Senior running back Carlos Harris, who got off to a phenomenal start to the season before injuring his ankle in a game against Frisco Wakeland, regained his early-season magic and knotted the game at 14 apiece with a 19-yard touchdown run less than three minutes after Lincoln recaptured the lead.
Junior Derek Deiter would add a 6-yard touchdown run of his own less than two minutes before halftime, allowing Frisco to take a one-score lead into the locker room.
The halftime lead came despite multiple first-half penalties on Frisco. The Raccoons ended the game with 11 for 85 yards.
"We talked about three things at halftime," Gibson said. "Play smart, play hard and play together. We just weren't playing smart in that first half."
The message must have stuck for Frisco, as the Raccoons came out of the extended halftime and buried Lincoln by scoring 35 points in the final 24 minutes.
It was the third frame that did Lincoln in after Frisco scored three unanswered touchdowns in the quarter, with the first come on a 1-yard touchdown run from junior running back Ben Cole.
Fields then added his second touchdown catch of the game after Allen connected with the receiver on a 25-yard strike that needed a spectacular catch from Fields to be completed.
Fields finished the game with 54 yards receiving on four catches with two of them going for scores.
Meanwhile, Allen had another solid outing, completing all eight of his pass attempts for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
"[Allen] is still hobbled a bit," Gibson said. "He's not quite at full speed yet but the kids definitely believe in him."
Senior Jordan Daniels would cap off the third-quarter scoring with a 3-yard run at the 1:46 mark of the period.
Leading the Frisco ground attack was Harris. The senior running back tallied 105 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries.
"[Harris] just makes plays," Gibson said. "He's battled through some ankle problems this year and it was nice seeing him running the ball with success today."
Junior quarterback Noah Montgomery would get in on the mix during the final quarter. Montgomery completed a 74-yard touchdown pass to receiver Andrew Enenmoh with 9:28 remaining in the game to give the Raccoons a chance at breaking the 50-point mark.
Following Neal's third touchdown pass of the game, the Raccoons made it 56 points on the day with a 21-yard run from senior David Blease.
The win gives Frisco (10-2) 10 wins on the season and sets the team up with a third-round matchup against Kilgore.
Specifics of the game had not been determined as of press time.
"We're still trying to hash out the details," Gibson said. "It'll probably come down to a coin toss."
