District 10-5A football race once again appears wide open
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@acnpapers.com
Nearly every year, coaches will say that the race for the district championship is up for grabs.
Last season, three teams grabbed a share, as Rowlett, McKinney Boyd and Garland finished in a three-way to for the title.
With such a tight race expected, it makes every game important, even those at the start of the district season, which is scheduled to get started this week.
The eight teams in 10-5A have had a rough time through non-district play, combining for a 8-16 record. Only undefeated Sachse (3-0) and McKinney Boyd (2-1) have winning records at this point.
The Mustangs have been the most impressive of the teams thus far, outscoring its opponents by a combined score of 134-30. But Sachse has been in this position before, having gotten off to a strong start, but is still searching for its first playoff appearance.
McKinney Boyd has posted solid victories over cross-town rivals McKinney North and McKinney. The Broncos' lone setback came in a 44-36 loss to Flower Mound.
Rowlett, Garland and Naaman Forest are all 1-2 thus far.
The Eagles thought they were on their way to a 2-1 start before Wylie rallied for a 30-27 victory last week. Rowlett and Naaman Forest's lone win this season each came at the hands of Rockwall.
Although Garland has only one win to show for the season at this point, they should be battle-tested, having played the toughest schedule among non-district teams.
The Owls close losses to Denton Guyer, the state runner-up last season, and Duncanville. They got on the winning track last week with a solid win over Lake Highlands.
North Garland, Lakeview and South Garland have had forgettable starts that they are looking to put behind them now that the district season has arrived.
The Patriots were blasted in a 56-0 loss to Plano in the season opener, but showed improvement in close losses to Sulphur Springs and Rockwall-Heath.
The Colonels have also been close to notching a win. Outside of a lopsided loss to Arlington Martin, South Garland was a play or two away in tight losses to Plano West and Berkner.
As for the Raiders, they are looking for a dramatic turnaround if they want to be a playoff contender, as they have been outscored 143-36 in their three losses.
