Cards no match for Coyotes
BY Bill Conrad, bconrad@acnpapers.com
ANNA -- John Paul II had no answer for Anna Friday night as the Cardinals fell 70-26 at Coyote Stadium.
Anna (2-0) was led offensively by quarterback Cory Meaders, who used his feet and right arm to carve up the Cardinals' defense for 333 yards of total offense. The senior signal caller was responsible for five touchdowns en route to the victory.
The Coyotes put the game away early and held a commanding 42-0 halftime lead. John Paul II head coach David Gaffney said his team was prepared for Anna's spread offense, not the zone read and option attack that the Coyotes deployed.
The Cardinals (1-1) had trouble on offense in the first half, gaining only 54 yards on offense. Cardinals' quarterback Christian Boese completed 9-of-18 passes for 51 yards in the opening half, but also threw four interceptions. One of the interceptions was returned by Keith Lockhart 24 yards for a score.
"Coach [Curren] McMahon does a good job with his kids," Gaffney said. "They did some things with disguising their coverages that we didn't see on film. We felt we had a solid game plan coming in and got most of the looks we wanted in the first half; we just didn't take advantage of them. We turned the ball over way too much in the first half."
Even though John Paul was trailing by six touchdowns entering the second half, the Cardinals came out of the locker room and began to look like the team that won its opening game, 40-13.
"We didn't make a whole lot of adjustments at halftime," Gaffney said. "We challenged them in the second half. We told them there were a lot of things we want to accomplish as a football team and this game is a big stepping stone for us. We have to learn some lessons about going back out and playing hard and finishing the game. We challenged them to do what we thought they could do and we had a little success in the second half, but we are still far from where we need to be."
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard with 3:45 left in the third quarter. Trailing 56-0, Boese threw his first touchdown of the night when Cameron Meziere made a leaping one-handed catch on a 24-yard pass that was slightly behind him.
Meziere and Boese connected again less than four minutes later, this time from 30 yards out. Meziere ran a deep post and got behind the cornerback and safety for the wide open touchdown to make the score 63-13. Boese finished the game by completing 27-of-43 passes for 304 yards. He threw four touchdowns and five interceptions.
"Christian bounced back and started making some throws," Gaffney said. "Sometimes when we get down he tries to get it all back with a throw or two. We are still teaching him and the rest of our guys to let the offensive system work. In the second half he showed us that when he is calm and collected, he can run our offense. We just have to get him to the point where he battles like that from the get go."
Boese was not finished after connecting with Meziere on the second score of the night. With two minutes left in the game he found Ryan Cook on a post pattern for a 44-yard touchdown. After forcing an Anna punt, Boese found Cook again from 23 yards out for the final touchdown of the game.
The Coyotes used a balanced offensive attack in their 10-touchdown effort. In addition to his interception return, Lockhart added touchdown receptions of 31 and 86 yards. Darrien Hampton had 113 yards rushing on only seven carries, with two of those carries going for touchdowns.
Cook led all Cardinal receivers with eight catches for 109 yards. Meziere finished with three catches for 65 yards and Chase McCoy had six for 40. McCoy also led the team in rushing, finishing with seven carries for 23 yards. For the night, the Cardinals ran for only 18 yards on 19 carries.
John Paul returns to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it faces The Woodlands Christian Academy in The Woodlands.
