United we stand: Team chemistry could pay off for Lobos

One more win was all the Lobos needed last season for a playoff berth.
Falling that short of the postseason will certainly motivate the Little Elm football team this season, but head coach Donald Stowers sees a bigger reason for possible success than the motivation of last season’s failure.
“Our team is extremely unified right now,” he said. “All of the players are really buying into the team concept.”
“I truly believe that unity can impact a team’s success,” he said. “To have team unity like that and to also have talent to go with it can’t hurt.”
Little Elm finished the 2010-11 season with a 5-5 record and an extra win would have meant a playoff berth from District 4-4A for the Lobos.
“Our goal is always to make the playoffs,” Stowers said. “We want to be there every year. Obviously we didn’t reach that goal last year but we’re capable of getting back there again this season.”
In order to make a return trip to the postseason, Stowers mentioned several factors that will likely need to occur.
“First off, we just need to stay healthy,” he said. “If we stay healthy and stay focused our kids should be able to get back to the playoffs again this year.”
The Lobos will kick off its regular season tonight with a home game against Greenville. The two teams met in the regular season opener last year with Little Elm taking a 31-10 win on the road.
“Greenville has a lot of speed and a lot of talent,” Stowers said. “They always play hard. It could definitely be a competitive game for us.”
The Lobos will have the benefit of playing in front of their home crowd though. The two teams will square off at Little Elm High School at 7 p.m.
“It’s always good to open at home,” Stowers said. “We know the environment well. Hopefully we’ll have a lot of fans out there.”
When the Lobos take the field tonight, leading returning receiver Keylon Reid will be sidelined due to an ankle injury. Reid’s injury will likely mean several players having duties on both sides of the ball.
“Some guys might have to do a little double duty,” Stowers said. “We’ll have to try and fill in for some of our open spots.”
During last week’s scrimmage, the Lobos’ final scrimmage of the offseason, Little Elm scored six touchdowns on Royse City while surrendering just two on the defensive side of the ball.
Royse City met Greenville Oct. 22 last year and came away with a 49-14 win. That alone should give the Lobos reason to be confident heading into tonight’s game.
“We’re definitely on the right track,” Stowers said.
